Chapter Twenty-TwoAgnes was feeling rather pleased with herself. Her horse had come in second, so now she had some money coming her way. The kind-faced man, wearing a heavy overcoat, a thick scarf and a rather well-worn trilby hat, had patiently explained the procedure; suggesting that, as she was new to horse-racing, she should back the horse both ways. She tilted her head to one side as she looked through the list of horses running in the next race. 'Studying the form', the man had called it. “You need to check how the horses and riders did on previous days.” Still befuddled by the information given on the racing card, she decided to choose a horse simply by its name; whether it sounded fun, appealing, or even cuddly.
