CHAPTER 3
ELARA
The first months in the Silver Veil Coven felt like a dream mixed with nightmares. I was still broken inside, but the priestesses refused to let me stay weak.
High Priestess Lira visited me every morning. “Elara, you must eat more,” she said gently one day while handing me a bowl of warm soup. “Your body needs strength for the child and for the magic waking up inside you.”
“I don’t feel any magic,” I replied, touching my growing belly. “I only feel fear. What if the king finds out about the baby? What if Lady Isolde sends people to kill us both?”
Lira smiled kindly. “Fear is normal, child. But fear can become power. The Moon Goddess has blessed your bloodline with ancient moon magic. We will awaken it together. Trust us.”
The training started slowly. Every afternoon, the younger priestesses gathered with me in a moonlit clearing.
“Close your eyes, Elara,” said Sister Selene, the kindest teacher. “Feel the moonlight on your skin. Let it flow into your heart. Now repeat after me: ‘Moon above, grant me calm.’”
“Moon above, grant me calm,” I whispered. At first nothing happened. I opened my eyes and sighed. “It’s not working. I’m still just a broken maid who got ruined by the king.”
Selene laughed softly. “You are not broken anymore. Try again. This time, think of your child. Imagine protecting the little one with silver light.”
I tried harder. A small spark of cool energy tingled in my fingers. “I felt something!” I said excitedly. “Like cold fire in my hands.”
“Yes!” Selene clapped. “That is the beginning. Every day we will grow it stronger. You will learn to heal, to calm wild wolves, and one day to face the Lunar Fury itself.”
Months passed like that. I trained from sunrise to moonlight. My belly grew big and round. The priestesses became my new family.
One evening, when I was eight months pregnant, I sat with Lira by a quiet stream.
“I’m scared to give birth,” I told her honestly. “What if the baby looks exactly like the king? Those ice-blue eyes… I don’t know if I can love it.”
Lira placed her hand on my shoulder. “Many mothers feel this way after pain. But love often grows after birth. Talk to the child now. Let your voice reach the baby.”
I rested both hands on my belly and spoke softly. “Little one, I don’t know if I’m ready to be your mother. Your father hurt me badly, but you are innocent. I promise I will keep you safe. Please be strong when you come out.”
A small kick answered me. I gasped. “Did you feel that? The baby kicked when I spoke!”
Lira smiled. “See? The child already knows your voice. You are bonding.”
The birth came on a full moon night. Pain started suddenly while I was practicing magic.
“It’s time!” I cried out, doubling over in the temple hall. “The baby is coming!”
Priestesses rushed around me. They helped me to the birthing room filled with soft silver light and moon crystals.
“Push when the pain comes, Elara,” Lira instructed calmly. “You are strong. Breathe with the moonlight.”
I screamed as the first big contraction hit. “It hurts so much! I can’t do this!”
“You can,” Selene said, holding my hand tightly. “Remember your training. Channel the moon energy to ease the pain. Push now!”
I pushed hard, crying and shouting. “Why does everything in my life have to hurt? First the king, now this!”
Hours passed. Sweat covered my body. Between contractions I begged them, “Please tell me the baby is okay. Don’t let anything happen to my child.”
“The heartbeat is strong,” Lira assured me. “One more big push, Elara. The head is almost here.”
With a final scream that echoed through the valley, I pushed and felt the baby slide out. A loud, healthy cry filled the room.
“It’s a boy!” Selene announced happily. “A beautiful baby boy with the brightest ice-blue eyes.”
They placed the tiny baby on my chest. He was perfect — tiny hands, soft dark hair, and those unmistakable eyes. Tears rolled down my face as I looked at him.
“Hello, my son,” I whispered. “I’m your mother. I’m so sorry for the pain that brought you here, but I will never let anyone hurt you.”
Lira wiped my forehead gently. “What will you name him?”
“Kai,” I said without hesitation. “Kai means ‘strong sea.’ He will need to be strong in this world.”
Kai cried again, and I rocked him softly. “Shh, little Kai. Mama is here. We are safe now.”
The priestesses celebrated quietly. Selene brought me healing tea. “You did wonderfully, Elara. Rest now. We will help you care for him.”
As the months turned into years, I trained even harder while raising Kai. The little boy grew fast. He had his father’s alpha strength but my gentle heart.
“Look, Mama!” Kai said one day when he was two years old. He pointed at a small moonflower I had made bloom with my magic. “You made the flower glow!”
I laughed and picked him up. “Yes, my love. One day you will learn magic too. But first, you must stay safe and hidden.”
Kai touched my cheek with his small hand. “Why do we hide, Mama? Is the bad king coming?”
My heart tightened. I kissed his forehead. “There is a powerful man who doesn’t know about you yet. When the time is right, we will face him together. But for now, this is our home.”
High Priestess Lira trained me personally in the final year.
“You have changed so much, Elara,” she told me during one advanced lesson. “Your magic is now stronger than most of us. The ancient moon blood in you has fully awakened. You can calm alpha fury and heal deep wounds.”
“I still have nightmares about that night,” I admitted. “The king’s glowing eyes, his hands… I swore I would get revenge.”
Lira nodded seriously. “Revenge is allowed, but do not let it poison your heart. Return as Lady Elowen of the Silver Veil. Become so valuable to the kingdom that they cannot discard you again. Protect Kai above all.”
On Kai’s third birthday, I made my decision. I held my son close after the small celebration.
“Kai, Mama has to go on a journey soon,” I explained gently. “You will stay here with Aunt Selene and Grandmother Lira. They are your family now too. I will come back for you when it is safe.”
Kai’s blue eyes filled with tears. “Don’t go, Mama. What if the bad king hurts you again?”
I hugged him tight. “I am stronger now. No one can hurt me like before. I promise I will return and bring you to a better home. Be good for the priestesses, okay?”
“Okay,” he whispered sadly. “I love you, Mama.”
“I love you more than the moon and stars, my brave boy,” I replied, kissing his cheeks.
The day finally came. I stood at the edge of the valley, dressed in elegant silver robes embroidered with moon symbols. My long dark hair flowed freely. I no longer looked like the scared maid. I was Lady Elowen now.
Lira walked with me to the path. “Remember everything we taught you. Use your magic wisely. The palace will test you.”
“I will,” I said firmly. “Thank you for saving me three years ago. Thank you for giving me a son and a new life. I will make you proud.”
Selene hugged me tightly. “Write to us when you can. And protect little Kai’s secret until the right moment.”
“I will,” I promised. “Take care of my boy. Tell him stories about the moon every night.”
Kai ran to me one last time and wrapped his arms around my legs. “Come back soon, Mama!”
“I will, my love,” I said, fighting tears. “Be strong like the sea. Mama loves you forever.”
With one final wave, I turned and walked away from the only safe home I had known for three years. The journey back to Blackthorn Palace took several days. My heart beat faster as the tall dark gates appeared in the distance.
The sun was setting blood-red when I reached the entrance. Guards stood tall with wolf emblems on their armor. I lifted my chin and walked forward with steady steps.
One guard stepped forward. “Halt. State your name and business.”
I spoke clearly and with confidence. “I am Lady Elowen of the Silver Veil Coven. I come as an official emissary with gifts of moon magic for the kingdom and the Alpha King.”
The guards looked at each other, then bowed respectfully. The first guard smiled politely. “You are expected, my lady. The king has been informed of your arrival. Welcome to Blackthorn Palace, Lady Elowen.”
The second guard opened the heavy gates wider. “Please follow us. We will take you to your prepared chambers. Welcome, Lady Elowen.”
I walked through the gates into the palace that once destroyed me. The familiar cold halls now felt different. I was no longer the weak maid. I was powerful. I carried secrets that could shake the throne.
As the guards led me inside, I whispered silently to myself, “I’m back, King Darius. This time, things will be very different.”
