Time seemed to stand still as I sat next to the road holding Christian in my arms, his head lolled to one side and the pain seared through me. My own blood dripped onto his face and I felt a hand on my shoulder. “Kiran, you need to let go.” I turned my head sideways and looked at the police officer crouched next to me. Two paramedics stood right behind him and I let go reluctantly. One of them shone a light in my eyes and said something but I couldn’t focus. They were looking for a pulse but I already knew.
