Chapter 5: kidnapping and darkness

The night over Elysara had turned restless. The city’s enchanted skyline glittered beneath a pale moon, but beneath the beauty, something darker stirred. Magic pulsed through the streets like an invisible heartbeat. Shadows stretched longer than usual, crawling across rooftops and alleyways as if they were searching for something. Liora Selwyn felt it before she understood it. Danger. She stood on the edge of a rooftop overlooking the glowing city streets below, her sharp eyes scanning the distance. Her breath formed faint clouds in the cool night air. The wind tugged at her coat, but she barely noticed. Something was wrong. Very wrong. She had spent years hunting magical artifacts and navigating dangerous cities, and she had learned to trust the instinct that whispered warnings before chaos erupted. Tonight, that instinct screamed. Her hand instinctively drifted toward the dagger strapped to her thigh. “Adrian?” she called quietly, turning to look behind her. There was no answer. For the first time since they had begun working together, Adrian Veyra wasn’t nearby. The silence felt… unnatural. Then the air shifted. A soft laugh echoed across the rooftop. Smooth. Amused. Dangerous. “Looking for someone?” Liora’s heart dropped into her stomach. She spun around. Standing in the shadows behind her was Cassian Draal. The rival mafia lord leaned casually against the rooftop railing as if he had been waiting there for hours. His dark coat moved gently in the wind, and the moonlight illuminated the faint, mocking smile on his lips. His eyes gleamed with quiet amusement. “Well,” Cassian said, slowly straightening. “You’re even more impressive up close.” Liora tightened her grip on her dagger. “I thought Adrian warned you to stay away from me.” Cassian chuckled. “Oh, he did.” He took a slow step toward her. “But Adrian doesn’t control everything in this city.” The moment his foot touched the rooftop, the world twisted. Buildings bent like reflections in broken glass. The sky warped. The city stretched and folded in impossible angles. Liora’s breath caught. Illusions. Cassian’s magic had wrapped around the rooftop like a living maze. Flames erupted along the edges of the buildings. The ground beneath her feet cracked and shifted. Shadows twisted into monstrous shapes that crawled along the rooftop tiles. But Liora didn’t panic. She closed her eyes for a second. Focused. Her unique magic stirred beneath her skin — the rare immunity that made her different from every other person in Elysara. Slowly, the illusions began to flicker. Cassian watched her carefully. Interesting. “Most people scream by now,” he said lightly. Liora opened her eyes. “And most people aren’t me.” With one sharp step forward, the illusion of flames dissolved around her like mist. Cassian’s smile widened. “Yes… you really are special.” Before she could respond, the illusion shifted again. This time, the ground beneath her vanished. Invisible force wrapped around her arms, lifting her off the rooftop. Her dagger slipped from her fingers and clattered to the tiles below. Liora struggled, but the magic holding her was too strong. Cassian walked toward her slowly, admiring his work. “You see,” he said softly, “Adrian has always had one weakness.” He stopped in front of her. “You.” Liora glared at him. “You’re wrong.” Cassian tilted his head. “Am I?” Then the entire rooftop exploded in darkness. A wave of shadows burst across the skyline like a storm breaking loose. The illusions shattered instantly. Glass windows cracked across nearby buildings. Streetlights flickered violently. The very air trembled as something ancient and powerful flooded the rooftop. Liora knew that power. Adrian. He stepped out of the darkness like a creature born from the night itself. His expression was colder than she had ever seen. Fury burned in his dark eyes. Shadows swirled violently around him, whipping through the air like living serpents. “Let her go.” His voice was quiet. But the command carried enough power to shake the rooftop beneath them. Cassian sighed. “So dramatic.” He released the spell holding Liora, but only enough to lower her feet to the ground. “Relax, Adrian,” Cassian said lazily. “I was just getting to know your… companion.” Adrian didn’t respond. The shadows around him surged. The temperature dropped instantly. Even Cassian’s smile faltered for half a second. “Step away from her,” Adrian said again. Cassian’s eyes gleamed. “Or what?” The answer came instantly. Adrian moved. One second he stood across the rooftop. The next, shadows launched him forward like a bullet. Dark tendrils exploded from the ground, wrapping around Cassian’s legs and slamming him backward into the rooftop wall. Cassian reacted just as quickly. Illusions erupted again, flooding the rooftop with blinding light and twisting shapes. Phantom blades slashed through the air. Buildings multiplied and warped around them. The battle had begun. Liora stumbled back as the magic erupted around her. The clash of shadow and illusion turned the rooftop into chaos. Adrian moved like living darkness, his shadows snapping and striking like whips. Cassian countered with shifting illusions, creating dozens of copies of himself that darted across the rooftop. “Still relying on brute force, Adrian?” Cassian mocked. Adrian’s shadows slammed through three illusions instantly. “Still hiding behind tricks?” Adrian shot back. Liora realized something. Cassian’s illusions were strong… but not strong enough to fool her. Her immunity cut through them. She stepped forward. “Adrian!” she shouted. He glanced toward her. “Left!” A shadow lashed out instantly. It struck the real Cassian just as he tried to move behind Adrian. Cassian staggered. Surprise flashed across his face. “You’re guiding him?” he said, laughing breathlessly. “How romantic.” But Liora didn’t stop. She moved closer to Adrian, standing beside him. “Together,” she said. Adrian looked at her. For a moment, the chaos around them seemed to fade. His shadows curled around her instinctively, forming a protective barrier. “Stay close,” he said quietly. Then they attacked. Adrian’s shadows surged across the rooftop like a tidal wave of darkness. Liora moved with him, pointing out the real Cassian through the illusion maze. Every time Cassian tried to vanish, Liora shattered the illusion with her immunity. Every time Cassian tried to strike, Adrian’s shadows intercepted the attack. They moved like they had fought together for years. Finally, Cassian slipped. One shadow wrapped around his arm. Another locked around his throat. Adrian slammed him against the rooftop. The illusion world shattered. The real city returned. Cassian struggled against the shadows holding him. His smile had faded. “You’re getting predictable,” Adrian said coldly. Cassian glared at him. “This isn’t over.” The shadows tightened. For a moment, it looked like Adrian might actually kill him. But Cassian suddenly laughed. And vanished. The shadows collapsed around empty air. Silence fell over the rooftop. The city lights flickered below them. Adrian stood still for a moment, breathing slowly as his shadows settled around him. Then he turned toward Liora. His expression softened instantly. He crossed the rooftop in two quick steps. “Are you hurt?” His voice had lost its cold edge. Now it held something else. Fear. Liora shook her head. “I’m okay.” But before she could say anything else, Adrian pulled her into his arms. The sudden embrace caught her off guard. His grip was tight. Protective. Relieved. For a moment neither of them spoke. The wind moved softly across the rooftop. “I thought I lost you,” Adrian murmured. His voice was barely a whisper. Liora felt her heart skip. She rested a hand against his chest. “I’m still here.” Adrian slowly pulled back. Their faces were only inches apart. The tension between them felt electric. “You’re reckless,” he said quietly. Liora smiled. “And yet I keep surviving.” Adrian studied her for a moment. Then the corner of his mouth lifted slightly. “Maybe that’s why I can’t stay away from you.” The shadows around them curled softly, no longer violent or dangerous. Almost protective. Almost gentle. And somewhere deep within the city of Elysara, the balance between darkness and light had begun to shift. Because Adrian Veyra had finally found something stronger than power. Someone worth fighting for.
