CHAPTER TWENTY Mom’s standing at the door waiting for me, a concerned squint in her eyes and her hands on her hips. “Are you okay?” Her hair still holds some of the same brown as mine. It falls over my head as she embraces me like I’ve been away for a year. God, I’m such a failure. First scare and I run straight back to my parents’ house like a child, wanting them to fix everything. I press my nose to her neck and breathe in the scent of her skin cream. “I’ve run you a hot bath. Dinner can be reheated, I saved you a plate.” “Thanks, Mom.” I’m shivering when I sink into the bathwater. The tears I’d fought since losing it at my house explode out of me, and I stifle my sobs into a small hand towel.
