Chapter 3

Lisanne's POV A sigh escaped my lips as I dumped the large basket of clothes with me in the laundry room. I rubbed my already heavy belly in pain as I tried stretching. For the last nine months of escaping to this pack, things have been much worse than they used to be. I moved from one homeless shelter to another every week, not wanting to stay in a place for long to avoid being recognized as a rogue. A sigh escaped my lips again as I picked up my wage for the day and headed back to the homeless shelter I was in. Life in there was unbearable, even for pregnant women like me. “You.” The keeper yelled at me immediately when she saw me there. “The chores you did this morning weren't good enough. If you are tired of living in the shelter, I will do you a favor. Pack your pieces of stuff and leave tonight.” “But…” I was taken aback and tried to explain my condition but she wasn't hearing any of it and just stormed off. “I was in a hurry,” I said with my voice trailing. This wasn't the perfect time to be kicked out of the homeless shelter. In a few days, I would be giving birth and I can't start looking for an alternative now. “Mistress.” I tried going after the shelter keeper but she pushed me away and I almost lost my balance. “I am not your issue so do not stress me. Pack your things and leave.” She barked at me angrily and I knew there was no persuading her. I packed my bags, everyone in the large hall was looking at me but of course, if they wanted a roof, they didn't dare plead on my behalf. A sigh escaped my lips as I packed my pieces of stuff and walked out of the shelter with the sky cloudy. I had nowhere to go and I knew the rain would meet me outside it wasn't the perfect time to have a cold but what choice did I have? I sat at a corner near a busy street as the rain started pouring. Cars started to pass by and I tried my best to lay low till the rain stopped but the rain didn't seem to stop at all. I sighed as I covered myself in the corner that I was. After a long time of staying there, I heard a car stop not far from where I was bent. I became stiff, what if someone had found me and they would imprison me for being a rogue in the pack? I became even more stuff when I heard footsteps in the puddle approaching me. “Who are you?” A masculine voice came from the person standing there and I didn't say anything although I know I have been discovered already. “I know you're there so I don't see why you should hide being there. I won't hurt you.” I still didn't move till an umbrella shielded my head. I looked up to see the stranger holding an umbrella over my head. He had striking gray eyes with neatly combed black hair. I shivered as his gaze lingered on me. “You're stubborn, aren't you?” “Please, don't hurt me. I have nowhere to go.” I pleaded and he held out his hand for me to take. I reluctantly took his hand and he pulled me up, dragging my bag which was behind me out. “Why are you out here? Heavily pregnant.” He said, looking down at my stomach which I tried to hide. “I… I was kicked out.” I replied softly and without saying a word, he led me towards the expensive-looking car that was parked at the side of the road. It was beautiful on the insides and neat. I knew getting into the car, I would make the seats wet due to my drenched body and he noticed the reactance. “It's fine, just get in.” He replied softly and I did as he said, sitting in the car anyway. He got in next to me and the driver stepped out of the car. “So, why were you kicked out?” “I've been here for going to nine months now after traveling down from my pack. I have been living in a homeless shelter and I just got kicked out.” I opened up to him and I found myself telling him everything that had happened to me and being rejected. Although I didn't tell him about me going rogue purposely, I didn't know who this man was but he seemed stinkingly rich and influential. “I didn't know shelter keepers in my pack were like this. Would look into the issue.” He mumbled and I looked at him in shock. “Your… your pack?” I asked him and he nodded. “I'm Bryan West, the alpha of this pack and you happen to be near my pack house and I wondered who it was. If you don't mind, you can stay there for as long as you want. Would like to redefine your stay so far for you.” He said and I looked at him in disbelief. “I mean it.” “Get in.” His expression changed into a cold one as he spoke to the driver who hurriedly got into the car and started the car before driving off. Heading into the large premises I was staying next to. The whole compound was brightly lit and a large mansion was standing behind a fountain. The car stopped in front of the mansion and guards hurriedly walked over with umbrellas as I stepped out of the car with Bryan. “Welcome back, my alpha.” They all chroused and Bryan just ignored them before walking in. The guards and maids looked at me weirdly as I walked behind him. “Take her to one of the rooms on the west wing and prepare some fresh clothes for her,” Bryan said to the maid who took his jacket before he sat on a sofa arranged in the large sitting area. “Yes, my alpha.” She bowed before looking over at me with a small smile. “Please this way miss.” She led me up the stairs and I followed, thanking Bryan but he didn't reply to me. The maid handed another his jacket as she walked up the stairs in front of me. From the way he interacted with others, I could tell he was the type of person who was feared. It could be seen in the action of each one of them and I was wondering why he was nice to me. Maybe it was because I was pregnant. “Welcome home, miss. Please if you need anything, do not hesitate to let me know.” She said with a respectful bow before leaving the room. The cloth Bryan asked her to get me was neatly folded on the bed and I went straight into the bathroom to take a nice warm bath. I haven't had an enjoyable bath since I arrived in the pack and I was so relaxed that I almost slept off into the bathtub but I controlled myself and stepped out. Changing into fresh clothes. I looked at myself in the mirror and then at my bump. I haven't had proper medications and feeding during my pregnancy and I feared for the baby's health. “Miss.” A knock came from the door and I turned to open it. One of the maids was standing there with her head bowed. “My alpha requested your presence at the dining table to have dinner.” I hurriedly rushed out of the room and walked down to the dining hall where Bryan was sitting alone and he was eating already. “Thank you for having me.” I thanked him and he hummed as I sat down to eat. I hadn't had a proper balanced meal and I tried my best to hide my happiness as I savoured the juicy meat and the fruits. After eating, I leaned back into the chair with a satisfied sigh. “Did you like the food?” He asked me and I nodded affirmatively. “Glad you did.” As I was about to say something else, I felt a slight pain in my stomach. I winced in pain and he seemed to notice. “Are you okay?” He asked me. “Yes… I'm…” Before I could say another thing, I started to feel pain in my stomach more intensely. “My baby…” I managed to say. “Get the doctor immediately.”
