"I, um, name" I stuttered
What was wrong with me, this man had turned me into a blubbering mess and I didn't even know his name yet.
I hadn't noticed Jess was talking to the other guy until she interrupted my pathetic attempt to speak.
"Carl is buying a round of shots" She declared.
"Sorry, I didn't catch your name" she said staring at my mate.
"Dante" he replied as he shook her hand.
Dante...Dante....why was that name familiar, I couldn't figure out why I new that name.
The bartender placed a round of shots on the bar in front of us and I downed mine first, trying to find some resemblance of my usual confidence.
Thankfully Jess was her usual bubbly self, doing enough talking for the both of us.
We learnt that the two were indeed in town for the conference, and we're from the Jade Mountains pack, which was nearly on the otherside of the country, they were staying in the city the night, before heading out to our pack tomorrow.
I was happy to let Jess do all the talking until I became the topic of conversation.
"Layla and I are cousins" she started, "and best friends. She is the youngest daughter of our Alpha, Alpha John Ambrose and our second best warrior"
I died a little inside, it was like she was pitching me, I didn't mind my mate knowing these things but in time, not in a sales pitch.
"Second only to her big brother right Lays". Brandon's voice interjected our conversation and he placed his arm around my shoulders.
Great, because this couldn't get any worse.
"Brandon Ambrose, future Alpha of the Oak River pack. I met Carl earlier at a different club" he said as he shook Dantes hand.
"This is our.." Carl started to say
"Dante," Dante quickly interrupted Carl, "nice to meet you Brandon".
Brandon seemed intent on becoming bros with the two, and being the big brother he was didn't mind making me look like and i***t at the same time.
"You'll have to excuse my sister and cousin. They're only 21 and don't drink much".
"Is he for real right now" Jess mind linked me.
Brandon's blubbering continued at my expense and I could feel myself turning bright red, all while Dante was staring at me with a smirk on his face. I wanted nothing more than the floor to open up and suck me in. This was not how I envisioned meeting my mate at all.
I had barely had a chance to say two words to him and now my brother was making me out to be some stupid little teenage girl.
Just when I thought I was going to combust from embarrassment, another male entered the circle.
"Carl, Dante, where have you guys been, there is a group of three hot as f**k human girls who I have waiting to dance with us, come on I need some wing men".
I instantly felt a pang of jealousy. Is that the kind of man Dante was, hooking up with random girls. I caught a glimpse of embarrassment on Dante's face.
He turned to the guy "Actually just chatting with Layla and Brandon here, daughter and son to Alpha Ambrose, our host pack this week" he said in a tone of voice as if hinting to his friend to shut up.
He turned back to us and introduced the man as Alex, another warrior. Making a joke that he was clearly an unmated male.
Dante POV.
As soon as I entered the club I started to feel restless. My warriors Carl and Alex had convinced me to come out that night. We were good mates being a similar age, so I agreed. But something was off. We had made our way to the upper level of the club and I was standing overlooking the balcony when I saw the most breathtaking women I think I'd ever laid eyes on.
I was watching her and her friend walk across the dance floor when I caught a delicious scent. It was like wildflowers and vanilla. It was her, I instantly new she my mate, and when we caught each other's eyes all I could think was how gorgeous she is.
I watched her make her way upstairs then lost sight of her. It wasn't long though before her scent led me to the bar. I had mind linked Carl what was going on so he came with me.
Up close I was able to see more details. She had beautiful brown eyes which complimented her brown hair. Her body was an athletic curvy. Not too skinny. and sexy as hell. And although I could see she was embarrassed by the whole situation, that somehow just made her even more sexy.
I could of kicked Alex when he asked us to go pick up girls with him.
Granted in the past I may have, but I didn't want my mate to know that.
I was trying to devise a plan to get her on her own to talk to her when her brother had appeared.
"Brandon" I said grabbing his attention, "how do you rate your wingman skills. Alex here needs all the help he can get", I joked.
I saw Brandon look at his sister then Alex.
Layla rolled her eyes. "I'm fine Brandon, go and have fun, but I don't want the details ok".
Brandon seemed hesitant to leave his sister, but I noticed what seemed to be him and Layla mindlinking back and forth for a bit before he agreed and him and Alex were off. Quickly acting like old buddies.
Carl had already asked Jess to dance, so I was glad to have my mate alone, but before we even got a chance to speak, Jess and Carl reappeared.
Layla POV
The mate bond between us was instant and strong. I was so unbelievably turned on by him being this close. I could understand why many mated on the first day of finding each other. But I wanted to get to know him first. What if he was an absolute asshole and I went and bound myself to him for life.
I was nervous as hell to be now sitting alone with him at the bar, but we hadn't even had a chance to speak when Jess reappeared.
"Girl we gotta go" she said just as Brandon also came up looking a little on edge.
"Time to go guys"
"Why what's wrong?" I queried, wondering why the mood had changed so suddenly
"Rouges" was all Brandon said.
Alex laughed, "is that what this is about, I'm sure we could take them".
Brandon was already in 'Alpha mode' as Jess and I called it
"We could, but we don't want to stir s**t when the conference starts tomorrow, it's not worth it".
I could see two of our packs warriors, Brandon's mates, heading towards us, must of been who he was out with tonight.
"Nice to meet you boys, but we are leaving before this becomes a thing, I suggest you all do the same too" Brandon said as he began to pull me towards the fire exist at the back of the club.
Sorry was all I managed to mouth to Dante before we were heading out the exist and down the stairs, coming out in the ally behind the club.
Dante, Carl and Alex appeared behind us.
Dante seemed on edge. I wasn't sure if that was because I was leaving, or because of the rogues.
We managed a rushed goodbye before we were hurrying away from them. I glanced back and saw Dante watching us walk away, he winked at me with a sly smirk on his face and I realised he was checking me out.
I quickly turned back before he saw me turn red in embarrassment.
"I'll jump in with you guys and the boys can take my car home" Brandon said.
On the way home I had to ask.
"Not like you to avoid a fight Brandon, what was really going on"
He tried to brush me off but I knew better.
He sighed, "Alrite. There aren't many rouges that hang around in the city, so we kind of know who they are. Hell we even buy weed from some of them. But for the most part we leave them alone and they leave us alone. But the boys and I hadn't seen these ones around before. And if I tell Dad he will tell mum we were out tonight and I think we can all agree we are getting too old for a lecture from Mum".
We laughed but then sat in silence for a bit, Jess and I now understanding the urgency to leave the club and the dilemma Brandon faced on weather or not to tell our father was the real reason.
Jess and I flopped down in my bed. It was past three in the morning once we got home. And we had to be up by 8 to help with conference prep and be ready to greet guests as they arrived.
Those Jade Mountain boys are hot Jess mused as we lay there.
"He's my mate" I blurred out.
