As we sat outside the hospital my sister jabbed my sides breaking me out of the daydream I hadn't realised I was in.
"You ok sis, the baby is fine, you don't have to worry, or is it something else."
"What, no I'm fine, just a big week filling in for you" I teased.
She smiled,
"trust me I feel like I'm missing out on all the fun"
"See, that's the difference between you and I sis, you think this stuff is fun." I replied causing her to laugh.
As we drove back to the pack house we passed a group taking a tour of our grounds. I had missed lunch and someone else must of taken my tour.
It didn't matter, I told myself, Claire and the baby were more important.
With Claire safely tucked in bed I started to realise how hungry I was, and headed for the kitchen to grab something for myself and something to bring back up for my sister and Tim.
The pack house had a fairly large footprint. With 2 floors. The top floor housed the Alpha and Beta families, along with some guest rooms, while the bottom floor had more guest rooms, some warriors accommodations, my father and the Betas offices, dining room, Rec room and kitchens.
As I was making some food in the kitchen, I started to overhear some of the girls from our pack as they made their way past the door, and when Dante's name came up I paused to listen.
"He's so hot, and unmated too I hear, Bet he'll be needing some company during his visit" the voice I instantly recognised said.
Abby. It's not like we hated each other Abby and I, we just ran in different circles. And she was drop dead gorgeous. I felt an instant pang in my stomach at the thought of her throwing herself at my mate.
I tried to shake off the feelings as the voices trailed off and I headed up stairs to drop off Claire and Tim's food.
I was already feeling exhausted, but as my tour duties had been assigned to someone else I went in search of my mum to see if she needed help with anything.
While the Alphas all had their meetings during the week, my Mum would be hosting the visiting Luna's for their own meetings. They were all very connected and kept up to date with goings on in each pack. So while she was doing that, I would have to take care of all the conference things.
The rest of the afternoon flew by and before I could even pause to think we were heading to dinner.
I managed to catch up with Jess briefly. She was just as tired as I was, but I never even got close to Dante. We were sitting at opposite sides of the dining hall. We shared a couple of glances and smiles, but I also caught him looking at Jess a few times, which was really starting to bother me. Did he have a thing for her?
I even caught Abby introducing herself to him and found myself hoping she wasn't his type. But really she was all mens type.
By the end of dinner I was too exhausted to deal with these feelings of jealousy and insecurities over a man I hadn't even spoken to yet. All of the guest were mingling around and everytime I caught sight of Dante he was deep in conversation with another Alpha. So I decided to call it a night.
After making sure my mother didn't need any more help and the kitchen staff were all prepped for breakfast I headed upstairs to my room.
I didn't even bother getting changed, just threw off my dress and flopped down on my bed and almost instantly fell asleep.
When my alarm went off at 6am I was already awake. I had had the worst night sleep, tossing and turning, thinking about Dante and how we met.
I decided to go for a run to try clear my head.
I was making my way back to my room after my run, to shower before breakfast, the music in my headphones keeping me in my own little world, when I walked smack into someone.
I stumbled backwards and started to apologise profusely.
I recognised the man as the Alpha that had given me the creeps the day before. But couldn't remember his name.
"Im so so sorry Alpha, I didn't see you."
"That's quite alrite. Your Alpha Ambrose's youngest aren't you, Layla is it?"
"Yes yep that's me. So sorry again Alpha"
"Please call me Alpha Dexter" he said. His hands were on my shoulders as if he was steadying me, but it was starting to creep me out again.
"And please stop apologising. I'm lucky to have a lady such as yourself bump into me," he said with a grin that made me want to vomit.
"Um, nice to see you again Alpha Dexter, If you'll excuse me I'm just heading back to my room."
As I tried to move away his hands stayed on my shoulders and he very obviously looked me up and down. Not hiding it in the slightest.
He looked as if he was about to speak again when I spotted Tim coming down the hall.
I quickly mind linked him and his head shot up in my direction.
"Layla there you are. Claire needs you at our place quickly please."
"Of course" I said.
" Please excuse me Alpha Dexter"
He nodded but looked rather annoyed we had been interrupted.
I walked off with Tim back up the hall.
"You ok" he queried, concern all over his face.
"Yes, thank you. He was giving me the major creeps".
Tim laughed,
"He's old Layla, you could of taken him".
I had to laugh too, Tim was right.
"Yeh but that wouldn't of been good for inter pack relations now would it".
After Tim walked me to my room, and reassured me Claire was taking it easy. I quickly showered and got dressed.
The rest of the day went by in a bit of a blur.
The Alpha's had meetings and talks all morning, which Jess and I helped with by bringing in morning tea and refreshments
Dante and I were able to exchange a sly smile but that was the most I saw him all day.
I endeded up missing dinner as Jess and I had to pitch in in the kitchen. Turns out one of the Omegas was mates with a warrior from a visiting pack. So my mother had excused her of her jobs for the week so she could prepare to move to her mates pack.
So this meant that Jess and I would have to chip in more to cover her. Most packs wouldn't consider having an Alphas daughter helping out with Omega tasks, but my mother always treated everyone as equal regardless of their rank in the pack. So it didn't even phase Jess and I that we would have to help out a little bit until the Omega roster could be shuffled to cover everything.
But it did give me one more thing to worry about. My thoughts had been so consumed by finding my mate I hadn't even thought about what comes next. I couldn't bare the thought of leaving my family to move to his pack.
After dinner everyone was socialising on the deck that the dining room opened up on to.
Jess and I had joined in and I hoped to get a chance to at least say hi to Dante, but everytime I tried to get close, another Alpha would beat me to it, offering their condolences on his dad and sparking up another conversations. And if it wasn't an Alpha is was Abby or some other female throwing themselves at him. And again I caught him looking at Jess.
I was feeling utterly defeated so I called it a day, hoping to be able to get a better sleep.
The next two days went by pretty much the same.
Helping my mum manage everything while pitching in in the kitchen meant I barely had time for anything else.
Jess had teased that I should tell my mum I found my mate, then I might get the week off too. I didn't like my chances.
