Chapter Five : The Brother Nobody Mentioned

1060 Words
Nobody told Mia there was another brother until he was already standing in the foyer. She came down the main staircase on a Sunday afternoon expecting the usual quiet of the house, Damien locked away in his office the way he'd been most of the week, Julian off at some meeting he didn't bother explaining, and instead she found a man she'd never seen before leaning against the entry table like he owned the place, talking low with Camille in a tone that dropped the second Mia's footsteps hit the last few stairs. "You must be the wife." He said it without any of the coldness she'd started expecting from this family, more amused than anything, like the whole situation struck him as funny in a way nobody else in the house seemed to find it. "Nathaniel. I'd say somebody should've mentioned me, but knowing my father, I doubt it." "Nobody mentioned you." Mia kept her voice even though her mind was already running through everything she'd absorbed about the family tree in the past two weeks, none of which had included this man standing in front of her with Damien's jaw and none of Damien's guardedness. Camille shifted, uncomfortable in a way she hadn't been around Mia before. "Nathaniel's my … " She stopped, glanced at him, and tried again. "Damien's brother. Half-brother. It's complicated." "It's not that complicated." Nathaniel pushed off the entry table, unbothered by the tension he'd clearly walked into the middle of. "My father had me before he married Damien's mother, kept it quiet for a long time, and once it stopped being quiet, he decided the easiest fix was deciding I didn't exist anymore. Standard Julian Cross problem solving. I'm sure you'll get a firsthand look at how that works eventually, if you haven't already." Something in the way he said made Mia go still, the same stillness she'd felt at dinner the night Julian asked about her father, and Nathaniel noticed it, she could tell, the way his eyes moved over her face for half a second longer than casual conversation required. "Does Damien know you're here?" Camille asked, clearly trying to redirect whatever was happening. "Damien knows everything eventually. Just usually after everyone else." Nathaniel smiled at that, easy and a little sharp, and turned his attention back to Mia before Camille could push further. "How's married life treating you? Six days in, is it, give or take?" "It's been an adjustment." "I bet." He said it like he knew exactly what kind of adjustment she meant, and for a second Mia wondered how much this man actually understood about the terms of the will, about the reasons behind all of it, about her specifically. She hadn't expected anyone outside the immediate family to have opinions on any of it yet, and here was someone who'd apparently been cut out of that family entirely, showing up six days into her marriage with a look on his face like he'd been waiting for an excuse to come back. Damien's office door opened down the hall before anyone could say more, and his footsteps carried through the house before he actually appeared, and the second he rounded the corner into the foyer and saw his brother standing there, his whole posture changed, shoulders squaring in a way Mia hadn't seen from him even during the will reading. "What are you doing here?" It wasn't a question the way most people asked questions. Nathaniel didn't flinch from it, though, just spread his hands out slightly, palms up, like he was showing he'd come unarmed. "Camille invited me. I figured it'd been long enough." "Long enough since what?" Damien's eyes cut to Camille for half a second, something unreadable passing between the two of them, before he looked back at his brother. "You weren't invited to anything. Not by me, not by our father, and I doubt he'd have signed off if he'd known you were coming." "That's the beauty of it. He doesn't know yet." Nathaniel's smile didn't waver, though something underneath it had shifted, colder now, less amused. "I wanted to meet her before he had the chance to poison the introduction. Figured that was worth the risk." Damien's jaw worked like he was holding back several different responses and choosing the least explosive one. "Meet her, then. And leave." "Already did." Nathaniel glanced at Mia one more time, and there was something in that look that felt different from everything else that had passed between them so far, less curiosity, more calculation, the same flavor of attention she'd caught from Julian at dinner, though dressed up in a friendlier package. "Nice to finally put a face to the name, Mia. I imagine we'll be seeing more of each other." He left the way he'd apparently arrived, unannounced and unbothered, and the second the front door shut behind him, the tension in the foyer didn't lift so much as shift, redirecting itself toward the space between Damien and Camille, who wouldn't quite meet her brother's eyes. "You knew he was coming," Damien said. "I didn't think he'd actually show up." Camille's voice had lost its easiness entirely. "He's been asking about her for weeks. I thought if I let him meet her here, on our terms, it'd be better than him finding some other way to do it." "There's no version of Nathaniel showing up here that's on our terms." Damien rubbed a hand over his face, and for a moment he looked less like the controlled, unreadable man Mia had signed a marriage contract with and more like someone exhausted by a family history he hadn't chosen any part of. He glanced at Mia, and whatever he saw on her face made him pause. "Does he say anything to you? Before I got out here?" "Not much." It wasn't entirely a lie, though it wasn't the truth either, and Mia was starting to understand that this house ran almost entirely on that particular kind of language, answers built to hold up just long enough that nobody had a reason to ask a second question. "He seemed like he already knew things about me I didn't tell him." Damien didn't say anything to that, but the look on his face told her he believed it, and that he didn't like what it meant either.
