Chapter Four: Fire and Shadow

518 Words
The training area was super quiet, except for the gentle crunch of leaves under Aria's feet. The bright red moon hung high, giving the woods a glow like blood. She zipped up her dagger's straps, feeling her nerves tingle. Today, she wasn't just hitting the gym; she was training with Kael Nightfall. That idea had her chest doing a little dance. Kael seemed like a ghost among the trees, standing tall and sure, with that annoying vibe of control he always had." Are we just pretending to be enemies for five minutes?" he whispered, with a playful tone. Aria smirked, but her heart was racing, showing she wasn't as cool as she looked. "Don't get cocky, I’m still going to win.” They spun around each other, going through combat moves that needed teamwork and trust. Every dodge, every punch, every blocked hit made them always guess what the other was going to do next. Instinct took over where doubt used to be. Kael shifted to shield her side; she was ready, predicting his moves. They moved together in ways neither of them was ready to acknowledge. “You’re better than I expected,” Kael murmured as she dodged a strike and countered with a swift s***h of her dagger. Aria's lips curled into a slight grin." Sure, flattery might not be your savior For a second, it was just them and the firelight dancing on their faces, with the smell of pine and sweat mingling with a kind of pull that was hard to ignore. The peace got broken with a loud bang. Leaves went flying off the ground when that creepy thing slithered into the open space, looking even scarier than before. Its red eyes glowed with hunger, and it pounced on the duo. “Move!” Kael shouted, grabbing her arm and pulling her behind a tree. They fought together, naturally protecting each other's vulnerabilities. Aria's dagger sliced through while Kael's claws tore at the creature's closest limb. They pressed back to back, breathless, with their foreheads almost touching, ready for another attack. Adrenaline, fear, and a mysterious vibe filled the air between them. Kael's voice was deep, almost a growl." You really should've stayed back “And miss saving my life?” Aria teased, though her chest heaved with both exertion and emotion. He smirked, brushing a lock of hair from her face. “I think I’m enjoying this… more than I should.” A final growl from the beast snapped them back to reality. These packs can't just rely on skill; they have got to stick together. Aria, while sitting on the training grounds' edge, her hands just inches apart, couldn't help but think about the connection they shared. The moon tied them together — foes, buddies, something deeper. She couldn't ignore the pull she felt for kael, even though the surrounding shadows hinted at more danger, more challenges, and more repercussions. Somewhere in the heart of the woods, the shadowy beast lurked, absorbing knowledge, observing, getting tougher — its craving linked to their family histories and the old magic of the Moon.
