Jean stands completely still. He realizes that it will not do him any good to try and fight. He only has one shot to fire and even before he can aim the gun at Paul, the men on top of the coach will have shot. He leaves the weapon in his pocket and puts his hands in the air. In his heart, an overwhelming sadness and disappointment gnaw.
The Governor is the first to come to his senses. For him, the matter is vague, but he thinks he sees the light. Never before in his life has such a mess, or whatever he can call it, been played on him.
