The Breaking Point

I felt much better two days after the fainting spell. The dizziness was mostly gone, though a strange, heavy feeling remained in my stomach. I decided I needed to get out. I needed to do something. I went to the campus bookstore, hoping to find a few used novels to distract me. I was browsing through the mystery section when a familiar voice made me turn around. "Elena? You're actually out of bed?" It was Jax. He was wearing a simple hoodie and holding a stack of flashcards. He looked so normal, so safe. He wasn't a billionaire or a biker. He was just a guy who struggled with law exams. "I’m alive," I said, giving him a small smile. "I just needed some fresh air." "Well, you look a lot better than you did on that stretcher," Jax said. He hesitated for a second, rubbing the back of his neck. "Hey, since you’re already out, do you want to grab a coffee? Just as friends. No law talk, I promise." I looked at the door, then back at him. I was desperate for a piece of my old life. I wanted to sit in a normal cafe and talk about normal things. "I’d love that, Jax. Really." We walked over to a small coffee shop just a block away from the university entrance. It was a cozy place with big windows and the smell of roasted beans. We sat at a small table near the glass. For the first twenty minutes, it was perfect. Jax told me about his disastrous attempt at cooking pasta, and I actually laughed without looking over my shoulder. "See? This is what people our age do," I said, taking a sip of my latte. "What? Drink overpriced coffee and complain about life?" Jax joked. "Exactly." But then, the air in the shop seemed to turn cold. I looked toward the window. On the sidewalk, Alaric was walking by. He was wearing his usual long black coat, carrying a leather bag. He didn't stop. He didn't wave. He just slowed down as he passed the window, his eyes locking onto mine through the glass. The look he gave me was terrifying. It wasn't just anger; it was a cold, possessive fury that made the hair on my arms stand up. He looked at Jax like he was a bug he wanted to crush under his shoe. Then, as quickly as he appeared, he was gone. "Elena? You okay? You look like you saw a ghost," Jax said, reaching across the table. "I'm fine. Just a chill," I whispered. I tried to go back to the conversation, but the peace was gone. I felt a heavy weight on my chest. I looked out the window again, scanning the street. Across the road, parked near a fire hydrant, was a matte black motorcycle. Killian was leaning against a brick wall next to it, his arms crossed, staring right at the coffee shop. I felt my heart begin to race. I looked toward the corner of the intersection. A sleek silver car was idling at the red light. The tinted windows were up, but I knew who was inside. Silas. I wasn't on a date. I was being watched by three different hunters, all of them circling the same small table. "Jax, I’m so sorry," I said, my voice shaking as I stood up. "What? Did I say something wrong?" Jax looked completely confused. "No, you’re great. Truly. But I need you to leave. Please. Just go back to the dorms. I don’t want you to get caught in the middle of this." "In the middle of what, Elena?" "Just go, Jax! Please!" He looked hurt, but he saw the panic in my eyes and nodded. He grabbed his bag and hurried out the door. I watched him walk away safely, but I didn't leave. I was done running. I was done being followed like I was a criminal. The rage started in my toes and moved all the way to my head. I grabbed my bag, pushed out of the coffee shop, and marched straight toward the law building. I knew Alaric would be there. He always stayed late in his office on Tuesdays. I stormed through the empty hallways, my footsteps echoing against the stone floors. I didn't knock. I slammed his office door open so hard it hit the wall with a loud bang. Alaric was sitting behind his desk, reading a thick file. He didn't even look surprised. He just slowly closed the folder and took off his glasses. "You have a very dramatic way of entering a room, Miss Vance," he said coolly. "Don't 'Miss Vance' me!" I screamed, slamming my hands onto his desk. "I saw you! I saw all of you! You were at the coffee shop. Are you serious right now? Do you have nothing better to do than stalk a nineteen-year-old girl?" Alaric stood up slowly. He seemed to grow taller the angrier I got. “I am ensuring your safety, Elena." "Safety? I was having coffee! With a friend! I felt like I was being hunted!" I was shaking with rage, tears of frustration stinging my eyes. "You have no right to follow me. You have no right to tell me who I can talk to. I am not your property, and I am not a child!" "You are being reckless," Alaric said, his voice dropping to that dangerous, quiet level. "You are walking around in public with boys who couldn't protect you if the world ended. You don't understand the danger you are in." "The only danger I’m in is from you!" I shouted, pointing a finger at his chest. "You’re the one who marked me! You’re the one who keeps showing up in my head! I hate this! I hate all of you!" Alaric didn't flinch. He just watched me as I screamed at him, his blue eyes tracking every move I made. The more I yelled, the more I realized how quiet the room had become. The sun had set, and the only light came from the small lamp on his desk. "Are you done?" he asked. "No, I’m not done! I’m going to the dean. I’m going to tell them everything!" Alaric moved then. He walked around the desk, and for the first time, I saw the true rage behind his calm mask. He looked like he wanted to burn the whole building down just to keep me inside it. "You aren't going anywhere, Elena," he said. "Watch me!" I turned to bolt for the door, but his hand shot out, grabbing my wrist and pulling me back toward him. "We need to have a serious talk about your behavior," he whispered, his grip like iron. "And I think it's time you learned that your actions have consequences." I struggled against him, but it was like fighting a mountain. I was trapped in his office, in the dark, with a man who looked like he was finally done playing games.
