In the early hours of the morning, when the day's first flotilla of barges started to unload the cargo onto the delivery carts, Antoine, Henri, and Charlotte rode along the Seine and crossed the empty Pont Neuf. They took narrow streets through a residential neighborhood to avoid the parade of wagons, pushcarts, and wheelbarrows as well as the throng of workers entering the city on the main thoroughfare, and they pushed their way outside the city gates.
They rode in a single file line till Montrouge, where they were able to ride abreast.
