Honore made inquiries, but no one was certain how their names became known. The common speculation was they were denizens from the New World. Honore could not admit the loss of the relics to his superiors, or to his contacts in Bourges. He postponed his trip to Montpellier, deciding to blame the delay on the situation in Marseille's harbor. For a month, he alternated between praying and prowling the streets in search of men fitting the Marshall cousins' descriptions, to no avail. Award notices for the Marshall cousins' capture were posted – the city accused them of piracy, a private party accused them of theft, and the Navy accused them of sabotage. Honore realized the far-fetchedness of the allegations, indeed, could it be that two men were responsible for all the crimes of the evening?
