At Bourges, Antoine and Charlotte settled at the Lionheart Inn and met for dinner at its adjoining tavern where the table tops were clean and the tempting smells of roasted meats, baked bread, and spiced wine filled the air. Among the usual varying crowd of merchants, clerks, officers, tradesmen and farmers, Antoine was surprised to see d'Signac and another man in a Musketeer uniform.
Charlotte appraised the distinct blue-gray cloaks with a suspicious look. “I am exhausted. Let me sleep.” She reclined against the wall with her feet propped up and pulled her hat over her face just a split moment before d'Signac waved.
