My heart was hammering so hard I could feel it in my throat as I stared through the one-way glass. Caleb stood right next to me, his fingers pressing into my shoulder like he was afraid I’d crumble if he let go.
On the other side sat Diana Moore, sitting there calm as anything, like this was just another Tuesday for her. This was the woman who had smiled at my six-year-old every single day for four months.
Detective Martinez leaned forward. “We know you forged those medical records. Sent the threats, and got close to Evan on purpose. Why?”
Diana tilted her head a little. That thin, empty smile never left her face, like whatever used to be inside her had been gone for years.
“Because the Vaughns ruin lives,” she said, her voice completely flat. “Someone had to make you pay.”
