We're in the doctor's office, midtown. Same place where I found out I was pregnant. It's been five months now, I'm halfway there. I sit on the exam table, paper crinkling. Caleb is in a chair beside me. Holding my hand. Doctor Chen enters. Clipboard. Warm smile. "Good morning. How are we feeling?" "Tired. But okay." "Any cramping? Bleeding? Unusual symptoms?" "No. Everything's normal." "Good. Let's take a look at the baby." Ultrasound machine, cold gel on belly, wand pressing. Screen flickering. There he is. A little blob that's becoming a person. Arms, legs, head. Heartbeat strong and steady. "Heartbeat looks great," Dr. Chen says. "One forty-five. Perfect range." Caleb leans forward. Staring at the screen. "Is that his hand?" "Yes. See?
