My heart pounds. I reach for my phone.
"Don't bother. I'm not here to hurt you. I'm here to save you from making a terrible mistake."
"Get out."
"Not until you hear what I have to say. You think Caleb showing up with apologies and DNA tests means something? He hasn't changed. He's the same scared boy playing at being a man."
I sit up slowly. "How did you even get in?"
"Bill's easy to bribe. Fifty dollars for a key. You're not as safe as you think."
I stand up. Back against the wall.
"What do you want Sienna?"
She crosses her legs. Smiles.
"I want you to understand what you're dealing with. I want you to know the truth about that gala. Because Caleb's going to feed you lies and you're going to want to believe him."
"I know what happened. You showed him fake evidence."
"It was fake. Every text, every photo, every search. All manufactured. But do you know why? Do you know who paid me?"
I don't answer.
She leans forward. "Clara. Caleb's mother. Six months ago she offered me a hundred thousand dollars to make sure you and Caleb didn't last. Said you were inappropriate and you'd ruin everything she'd built."
"You're lying."
"Am I?" She pulls out her phone. Swipes, and turns it toward me.
Text messages. Clara's name.
"We need to discuss the Lena situation. She's becoming a problem. I'm prepared to pay you $100,000 to handle this discreetly. Make it convincing. Make him believe she's using him. Do whatever it takes. I want her gone."
She scrolls through dozens more. Planning. Coordinating. Clara and Sienna working together. I'm in disbelief.
"She paid you to destroy us."
"She paid me to protect her son from a gold digger. That's how she sees you. That's how she'll always see you."
"Why are you telling me this?"
"Because I'm tired of being Clara's puppet. And because you need to understand something."
She stands and walks closer. "Caleb will never choose you over his family. I've known him since we were teenagers. I've watched him bend to his mother's will a thousand times. He'll apologize. He'll cry. He'll promise to be better. Then the second Clara snaps her fingers, he'll fall right back in line."
"You don't know that."
"Don't I? He believed my fake evidence without asking you a single question. He humiliated you at his mother's gala. Called you a gold digger. That's who he is when the pressure's on."
Tears burn. I won't let them fall. "What do you want from me?"
"I want you to walk away. Take Cole's five hundred thousand. Disappear. Because if you stay, Clara will destroy you. And this time she won't need me."
"That sounds like a threat."
"It's a warning. Clara doesn't lose. Ever. You think you can fight her with twelve thousand dollars and a motel room? She has lawyers and money and connections you can't imagine. She will take that baby."
"Then why warn me?"
Sienna's face changes. Something almost human.
"Because I was you once. Twenty and in love with Caleb. Thinking his family would accept me eventually. They didn't. Clara made sure of that. So I'm giving you the choice I never got. Walk away before they destroy you."
She turns to leave.
"Wait." I say. "Why did you really come here?"
She looks back. "Because Clara asked me to. She wants to make sure you take the money. She's willing to go higher. Two million dollars to disappear and never contact Caleb again."
"And if I say no?"
"Then she'll make your life hell."
She walks to the door. Stops. "Think about it. Two million dollars. You could raise your baby anywhere. Give him everything. All you have to do is sign a paper saying Caleb isn't the father."
"But he is."
"Does that matter more than your child's future?" She leaves.
I stare at the phone on the nightstand. The entire conversation. Recorded. I hit stop. Send file to Caleb's number.
Text: Your mother paid Sienna $100K to destroy us. Listen to the whole thing.
I sit on the bed. Hands shaking. Two million dollars. What could I do with two million? Buy a house. Best schools. Never worry about money. All I have to do is lie.
Six months ago, Caleb brought me coffee at work every morning. Not expensive coffee. Just cheap bodega coffee with too much cream.
"Why do you drink this?" I asked once. "You can afford the best coffee in the city."
He smiled. "Because you like it. And watching you happy is better than expensive coffee."
I kissed him. "You know what I love about you? You're the only rich person I've met who doesn't act like money is the most important thing."
He pulled me close. "Money's just money. You're everything." I believed him then.
Standing in my motel room at four AM with a recording that could destroy his mother and an offer for two million dollars, I don't know what to believe.
My phone buzzes.
Caleb: I'm listening to it now.
Three minutes later: Where are you? I'm coming over.
Type back: Don't. I need time to think.
Caleb: Lena, please. I didn't know. I swear I didn't know she paid Sienna. Please let me explain.
I turn it off and lie back on the bed. Two million dollars or a lifetime with a man whose mother paid someone to destroy me. Both feel like losing.
Knock on the door. Loud.
"Lena! Open the door!"
Caleb's voice. Desperate. "I know you're in there. I know you sent me that recording. Please open the door."
I don't move. I hear different voices. Older. Sharper. "Caleb, stop making a scene. We're handling this."
It's Clara.
"You're handling this? You PAID Sienna to destroy my relationship!"
"I was protecting you from a mistake."
"She's pregnant with my child!"
"Allegedly."
"I have DNA proof!"
I go to the door. I don't open it, I just listen.
"This conversation is happening inside," Clara says. Voice ice cold. "Not in a parking lot."
"I'm not going anywhere until Lena opens this door."
Deeper voice. Marcus. "Your mother is trying to help you. We're prepared to offer Ms. Hart two million dollars. More than enough. All she has to do is sign paperwork."
"She's not signing anything!"
"Then we'll take it to court. Prove she's unfit. Prove she fled the state. We'll take that child the second it's born."
"Try it and I'll destroy you both."
Clara laughs. "Destroy us? With what? Your trust fund we control? Your position at the company your father owns? You have nothing without us."
"Then I'll have nothing. But I'll have my son. And I'll have her if she'll let me."
"Don't be stupid…"
"I'm done, do you hear me? Done with your manipulation, your control, I'm done with you."
Clara's voice, shaking. "If you choose her over us, you'll regret it for the rest of your life."
"The only thing I regret is not choosing her sooner."
I hear footsteps. Someone walking away.
Marcus: "Let him go. He'll come back when the money runs out."
Clara: "He better. Because if he doesn't, I'll make sure that woman loses everything."
More footsteps. Then quiet. I stand there, my hand on the doorknob. Caleb chose me over his parents. Over his money. Over everything? But Clara's threat echoes. I open the door slowly.
Caleb is standing in the parking lot. Alone. Face in hands. He sees me.
"Lena."
"Get away from her." Clara and Marcus walking back.
"This ends tonight," Clara says. "One way or another."
