Chapter 3: Into the Shadows

Chapter 3 – Into the Shadows Maya The city lights blurred beyond the car window. I sat trapped between two men, my entire body trembling. Every time I moved, one of them shoved me back down. Their silence was somehow worse than threats. It made them feel less human. My wrists hurt. My throat burned from crying. But none of it compared to the fear twisting inside my chest. Mom. The thought of her made fresh tears sting my eyes. Right now she was probably sleeping in her hospital bed, believing I would visit tomorrow like always. She didn't know where I was. She didn't know I had been taken. And if something happened to me... I squeezed my eyes shut. No. I couldn't think like that. I had to survive. The car continued through the city before turning toward an industrial district. The buildings became fewer. The streets emptier. Then I smelled salt. My heart sank. The harbor. One of the men noticed my expression and smirked. "Smart girl." The words sent a chill through me. The car rolled through a security gate and entered the port. Towering cranes stretched into the night sky. Rows of shipping containers stood like giant steel walls. The sight made me feel impossibly small. The vehicle finally slowed. Then stopped. Before I could react, the door opened. Strong hands grabbed me. I screamed. I kicked. I fought. But it didn't matter. They dragged me out onto the asphalt. "Please!" I cried. "Please let me go!" Nobody answered. Nobody came. The port felt empty despite the workers moving in the distance. As if everyone knew not to look too closely. Then I heard it. A deep horn. The sound echoed across the harbor. My stomach dropped. A cargo ship. The men dragged me toward it. "No..." Panic flooded through me. "No, no, no, please!" I dug my heels into the ground. One of them slapped me hard across the face. Pain exploded through my cheek. My protest died instantly. The man leaned close. "Keep quiet." I tasted blood. My vision blurred with tears. Then they forced me up the loading ramp. The massive ship loomed above me like a steel monster. The moment I stepped onto the deck, a terrible realization hit me. Once the ship left port... No one would find me. The thought nearly broke me. The men dragged me through narrow passages between containers. The ship groaned beneath my feet. Metal clanged somewhere in the distance. Everything smelled of rust, oil, and seawater. Eventually they stopped in front of a rust-red container. One of the men pulled out a crowbar. The metal door groaned open. Darkness waited inside. My heart nearly stopped. "No..." I stumbled backward. "Please... don't..." A rough hand shoved me forward. I fell onto the cold metal floor. Pain shot through my knees. The container door slammed shut behind me. The sound echoed through the darkness like a prison gate. For several seconds, I couldn't breathe. Couldn't think. Couldn't move. Then my eyes adjusted. And I realized I wasn't alone. Girls. Several of them. They sat against the walls. Silent. Broken. Some stared at the floor. Others stared into nothing. Their faces were pale. Their eyes empty. Like they had already given up. Fear wrapped around my heart. "Please..." I whispered. My voice shook. "Can someone tell me what's happening?" Nobody answered. Not one of them looked at me. The silence felt heavier than any scream. Slowly, I curled into myself. My arms wrapped around my knees. Tears rolled down my cheeks. I thought about my mother. Her smile. Her fragile voice. The promise I had made. I'll take care of everything. A sob escaped me. Now I couldn't even take care of myself. The ship's engines rumbled to life. The vibration traveled through the metal floor beneath me. My stomach dropped. We were moving. The outside world was disappearing. And there was nothing I could do. I buried my face against my knees. For the first time in my life, I felt truly helpless. Truly alone. And truly trapped. --- Kieran The evening air was heavy with the scent of salt drifting from the harbor. I was heading home when movement caught my attention. A girl was being forced into a car. At first glance, it could have looked harmless. An argument. A misunderstanding. But something felt wrong. Very wrong. The panic in her eyes. The way she struggled. The desperation in every movement. My instincts immediately screamed danger. Without hesitation, I ran toward my bike. The engine roared to life beneath me. The car was already pulling away. I followed. Keeping enough distance not to be noticed. But close enough not to lose them. My pulse hammered in my ears. If I failed now, that girl might disappear forever. With one hand on the handlebars, I called the police. I gave them the vehicle description. The direction. Everything I knew. The dispatcher promised officers were on the way. I wanted to believe her. But something told me we didn't have much time. The chase continued through the city. Then toward the harbor. My stomach tightened. The port. Ahead of me, the kidnappers drove straight toward a massive cargo ship. A deep horn echoed through the night. The loading ramp was already beginning to rise. "Damn it." I accelerated. The bike surged forward. The gap narrowed. For one terrifying second, I thought I was too late. Then my tires hit the ramp. I shot upward and landed on the ship. Behind me, the gate slammed shut. The sound echoed through the steel structure. There was no turning back now. I parked the bike behind a row of containers and moved into the shadows. The ship felt like a maze. Steel walls. Dark corridors. Endless hiding places. Perfect for people who wanted to disappear. Or make others disappear. My jaw tightened. Somewhere on this ship was the girl. And judging by the fear I had seen on her face... Time was running out. I took a slow breath. Then stepped deeper into the darkness. Ready to find her.
