The silver mist was still coming out of the ceiling vents in the office. It was like a fog that covered everything in a cold metallic frost. The biggest danger was not the mist. It was what was happening inside the executive suite. The air was heavy with the power of Evadne's scent. It was like nothing mattered.
Cassian was on one knee. He was hitting his fists on the floor to stop himself from moving. His eyes had changed. They were not amber anymore. They were wild gold. His chest was moving up and down. His suit was tight because his muscles were getting bigger. Every part of him was screaming a single overriding command: Claim her. Protect her. Never let her go.
"Mr. Sterling, " Evadne said. Her voice was not calm like it usually was. She was pushing herself against the glass window. The cold glass was not helping her. She was feeling a fire inside her. It was like her inner wolf was waking up. "Stay back."
"Soren..." Cassian's voice was low and rough. He was not speaking clearly. He got up and took a step towards her. His movements were slow and careful. They were also wild. He scratched the desk with his claws as he passed it. "No. That's not your name. What are you? Who are you?"
"I said, stay back!" Evadne shouted. She looked up. Her eyes flashed with a powerful light.
The psychological weight of her command struck Cassian like a physical blow. A lesser wolf would have been brought to their knees instantly, forced to submit to the royal lineage flowing through her veins. Cassian flinched, his head violently snapping back as his Alpha pride fought against the instinctual urge to obey her. He snarled, his fangs fully extending, dripping with saliva as he broke through the mental pressure of her voice and took another step forward.
"A Sovereign Omega " Cassian said. He was surprised and angry. The eyed wolves were supposed to be extinct. One was standing in front of him. She had been working for him for three years. "You lied to me. Every day!"
"I was trying to survive, " Evadne said. She was breathing hard. The silver mist was burning her skin. She picked up an award and held it like a weapon. "Your pack would have locked me up if they knew what I was. Don't say you would have treated me with mercy."
"Mercy?" Cassian laughed, a dark, dangerous sound that echoed off the reinforced walls. He was barely three feet away from her now. The intoxicating scent of wild winter lilies and pure ozone was driving his wolf to the brink of madness. He didn't want to hurt her; he wanted to tear the world apart to keep her safe, but the sheer possessiveness of the fated mate bond was blinding him. "You belong to this territory. You belong to me."
Before he could reach her, Vance, the head of security, let out a choked groan from the other side of the room. The silver gas had finally compromised his system. He collapsed onto his hands and knees, his skin breaking out in severe chemical burns as the liquid silver began to systematically shut down his internal wolf.
The sight broke the suffocating spell between Cassian and Evadne.
"Vance!" Cassian roared, the billionaire commander temporarily overriding the feral beast. He tore his gaze away from Evadne, rushing over to the ventilation control panel. He smashed the glass casing with his bare fist and ripped the manual wiring out. The high-pitched hissing from the ceiling suddenly died, and the emergency exhaust fans groaned to life, slowly sucking the metallic mist out of the room.
Evadne used this chance to move. She dropped the bronze award and ran to the broken suppression band on the floor. But before she could even try to press the broken blue threads back against her throat, Cassian caught her and pulled her close to his chest.
The touch was like electricity. Evadne felt a shock and tried to push him but he was too strong for her.
"Let me go, " she whispered, her eyes looking straight into his.
"Never, " Cassian growled, his face dipping down into the crook of her neck, inhaling deeply. A low, possessive purr vibrated through his chest, a sound so primal it made Evadne's own wolf whine in dangerous submission. "Three years I looked right through you. Three years you hid from me. The game is over, Evadne."
"It's not a game, " she said, her voice shaking. "Alpha Malakai knows what he put in those vents. Cassian! He didn't just target you. He knew the liquid silver would flush out any hidden wolves in the building.
He wants to find the silver-eyed lineage. If we don't get out of here he will kill everyone to get to me."
Cassian's eyes flashed with anger. "Let him try, " he said. "I will destroy him before I let him touch you."
"I am not yours!" Evadne yelled, her voice cracking with the emotional exhaustion of her exposed reality. "I am the heir of a fallen pack, and I will not be a trophy for the Valerius Syndicate!"
The steel doors of the suite creaked and groaned. Then a huge thud shook the metal making a dent in the center.
Vance got up from the floor, his face pale and bleeding from the silver burns. "Alpha, the security cameras outside just stopped working. They have broken into the lobby. It is Vanes' team. They are not trying to talk about the merger. They have brought guns."
Another big explosion hit the seventy-fifth floor. The windows behind Evadne broke into a million pieces and shards of glass fell over the marble floor. The building was starting to fall. Cassian covered Evadne with his body taking the hit from the flying pieces of glass and debris. His back got cut in places but he did not seem to feel the pain.
The red emergency lights began to flash rhythmically painting the office in a b****y, ominous glow. The elevator made a screeching noise as the cables got cut from below.
"We need to go to the garage downstairs, " Cassian said, picking Evadne up and carrying her towards the secret stairs behind the black desk. "Vance, cover us from behind. Make sure to destroy all the computer data so it does not leave the building."
"Yes Alpha " Vance said, taking out a g*n with a silver tip.
Cassian kicked open the door to the stairs. They went into the dark concrete emergency exit. He ran down the stairs fast carrying Evadne with ease because of his strong Lycan body. Evadne held onto his shirt, her mind racing. She was not wearing her suppression band anymore. Any wolf within a five-mile radius could find her if they smelled her scent. She was completely trapped in Cassian's arms. Cassian was an Alpha who wanted her for himself.
They reached the garage in less than two minutes. It was very quiet. Only the green exit signs were lighting up the place. Cassian's black SUV sat in the center of the private bay, its engine already idling via remote start.
Cassian went to the passenger door. Then the shadows around the pillars moved. Six big mutated wolves came out of the darkness. Their fur was dirty and b****y, their mouths foamy. These were not wolves, they were Malakai Vane’s Omega hunters, trained to find royal blood.
Behind them, was Malakai Vane himself, holding a detonator in his hand. He was smiling in a cunny way looking at Evadne's silver eyes.
"I knew it was true, " Malakai said, his voice echoing off the walls. "The last eyed royal, pretending to be a human secretary to a bad person. What a waste."
Malakai raised the detonator.
"Cassian look out!" Evadne screamed.
Before Cassian could move, Malakai pressed the button. A big blast came from the ceiling, above their heads. Tons of concrete and steel fell down blocking their way out and separating Cassian and Evadne in a cloud of dust.
Evadne was thrown violently to the ground, the wind knocked from her lungs. As the dust began to clear, she looked up, coughing violently, only to see three massive enforcers pinning Cassian to the floor under a massive metal beam, his furious roars echoing through the garage as he fought to break free.
Malakai came through the debris, his shadow falling over her. He grabbed her hair and pulled her face up to his.
"Let's see how much the Valerius Syndicate will pay to get their assistant back " Malakai said, putting a silver sedative patch on Evadne's neck.
Evadne's vision started to blur, her silver eyes faded into darkness as she heard Cassian's scream echoing through the garage.
