The silence in my room was the loudest sound I’d ever heard. All my thoughts were running everywhere all at once and I didn’t know what to do with it. It filled every c***k in the walls, every space between each heartbeat. It wrapped around me like a second skin—one I didn’t ask for but now couldn’t remove no matter how hard I tried to get off of me. I stared at the closed door, half-expecting Rome to knock. Half-hoping he wouldn’t because I just wanted to be alone. I craved the silence but also missed the human connection.
