Chapter Twenty
In the middle of Max’s office that Friday night Caroline stood in tears. She was jealous, angry and hurt, and she’d hardly slept in days. She felt as though there was a fire-breathing dragon inside her, which she had no way to contain.
“I saw you with a woman several nights ago,” she said, trying to be both bold and calm.
“Vicki, yes,” Max replied calmly.
“It shocked me,” she looked him directly in the eye, hoping he didn’t see how she was shaking.
“Did it?” he replied curiously. He leaned back in his chair, inspecting her with arrogant eyes.
The longer Caroline looked at his impassive expression the angrier she became, and the less she was able to hide her feelings.
