Chapter 1

LOPEZ CONSOLIDATED HOLDINGS HEADQUARTERS The morning sun streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Shannon López’s office, casting long shadows across her massive mahogany desk. Papers were stacked neatly on one side – financial reports, merger proposals, inventory lists – while her laptop glowed with spreadsheets that tracked every peso their company earned and spent. At the age of 28, she’d worked her way up from intern to COO in just five years, and every inch of her office screamed control. “Ms. López?” Her assistant, Mia Santos, knocked softly on the glass door before stepping inside. She was holding a tray with a cup of black coffee and a stack of fresh documents. “The audit team just sent this over. And also… Mr. De Niro is here. He’s already in the conference room, waiting for you ma'am." Shannon looked up from her screen, her dark brown eyes briefly narrowing before she smoothed her expression back to neutral. She’d known this meeting was coming – her father had arranged it the night after the ball, saying they needed to discuss the “terms and conditions” of their upcoming marriage. Still, the thought of facing Blaine Alistair De Niro alone made something tighten in her chest. “Thank you, Mia. Give me five minutes then Give me five minutes, then just send him in here.” she said, her voice calm despite the way her fingers tapped lightly on her desk. Mia nodded and backed out, closing the door quietly behind her. Shannon stood up and walked to the full-length mirror by the window. She was wearing her usual power suit – charcoal gray with a white silk blouse underneath – and her long black hair was pulled back in a neat bun. With her height of 5’7”, she didn’t need heels to command attention, but today she’d slipped on a pair of black stilettos that made her feel taller, stronger. Her face was flawless – high cheekbones, full lips, skin like porcelain – the kind of beauty that turned heads wherever she went. But right now, she didn’t care about looking pretty. She needed to look serious. You are not just a woman being forced into marriage, she told herself, straightening her blazer. You are the COO of López Consolidated. This is a business deal first, everything else second. She took a sip of her coffee – black, no sugar, just how she liked it – then sat back down behind her desk. A few seconds later, the door opened again. Blaine De Niro walked in like he owned the place. Even standing still, he was imposing – 6’3” of pure muscle and confidence, dressed in a custom-tailored navy suit that fit him perfectly. His hair was dark brown with hints of chestnut, slightly tousled like he’d run his fingers through it a hundred times. But it was his eyes that caught her attention most – a deep amber color that looked almost golden in the morning light, sharp and observant, like he was already calculating her worth. “Ms. López,” he said, his voice low and smooth, with just a hint of an accent she couldn’t quite place. He didn’t smile – not even a little. “Thank you for seeing me.” “Mr. De Niro. Please, have a seat.” She gestured to the chair across from her, keeping her posture straight and her gaze steady. He sat down, placing a leather folder on the table between them. Even his movements were precise – no wasted motion, no room for mistakes. “I assume you know why we’re here,” he said, opening the folder and pulling out a thick stack of papers. “My legal team and your father’s have drafted the marriage contract. We need to go over the details before we sign anything.” Shannon leaned forward slightly, her eyes scanning the top page. MARRIAGE AGREEMENT – DE NIRO & LÓPEZ, it read in bold letters. She felt a pang in her chest – this was really happening. She’d spent the past three days trying to convince herself that maybe, just maybe, her father would change his mind. But looking at the contract in front of her, she knew there was no turning back. “Before we start,” she said, stopping him before he could begin explaining the clauses. “I have some conditions of my own.” Blaine raised an eyebrow – the first sign of emotion she’d seen from him since he walked in. “Conditions? Your father already agreed to all terms.” “My father agreed. I did not.” She leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms over her chest. Even in heels, she still had to look up at him a little, but she didn’t let that make her feel small. “I understand that this marriage is to save my family’s company. I’m not naive – I know this is a business transaction. But I will not enter into this blindly, and I will not be treated like property.” For a moment, he just stared at her – his amber eyes studying her face like he was trying to figure out what made her tick. Then, surprisingly, he nodded. “Fair enough,” he said, closing the folder and leaning back in his chair. “Go ahead. What are your conditions?” “First – I keep my position as COO of López Consolidated. I will not step down, and I will not take a ‘figurehead’ role just because I’m married to you. Our companies will merge, yes, but I will maintain full authority over my team and my departments.” “Done,” he said without hesitation. “I’ve reviewed your performance records. You’ve increased profits by 32% in the past two years. You’re good at what you do – I’d be stupid to replace you.” Shannon was slightly taken aback by his straightforwardness. She’d expected him to argue, to try and take control. But he just… agreed.
