Chapter 1

LISA The sun blazed relentlessly outside, making my room feel like an oven. My mom, in her usual fashion, barged into my room without knocking, completely disregarding my privacy. "Wake up, you have an exam today," she exclaimed before swiftly exiting. I groggily got out of bed and went through my morning routine. Descending the stairs, I found my mother preparing breakfast for my big brother and I. “Good morning, Mom," I greeted, taking a seat at the dining table. "Morning, dear," she replied. My big brother rushed downstairs in a hurry, clearly running late. He greeted us and dashed out of the house, leaving Mom quite surprised. She served us breakfast, and afterward, she handed me R300, which put a smile on my face, knowing I could grab something at McDonald's. I stepped outside and waited for my friend's car to arrive. He soon pulled up, and we headed to school. We reached the school and parked in the learners' parking area. As we made our way to class, the invigilator and our Life Sciences teacher joined us, signaling the start of our exam. After finishing the exam, it was finally break time. We joined our friends at our usual table in the cafeteria. My best friend Lorraine couldn't resist prying into our love lives. “So guys, are you all still single?” she said, raising her left eyebrow. “Please, Lorraine spare us your silly questions,” I said annoyed. “Oh, come on Lisa. We all know you're perpetually single,” she said smirking. “Well, the rest of us are taken!” they all said laughing. Luncumo : Lisa, looks like you are flying solo Me : Lura, I'll find a girlfriend soon. How about we hit the club tonight? Them : Count us in!! School ended and I opted for a taxi home since Luncumo had to pick up his little sister. Upon arriving home, I heard laughter emanating from the house. Upon entering, I discovered my big brother, Inga and his girlfriend, Okuhle. Me: Hey, Kuhle (smiling). Kuhle: Hey, baby girl. Inga: Lisa, can you chat with me for a moment, please? Me: Sure thing, Inga. In my room : Inga: Lisa, can you do me a favor? Me: What do you need now? (sulking) Inga: I want you to take Kuhle to a nearby club tonight. Me: Okay, but why? Inga: Promise me you won't tell her about this? Me: I promise, big brother. Inga: I plan to propose to her. Mom also wants her to be my wife. Me: That's fantastic! But now, go help her get ready, or we'll be late. Inga: Alright, little sister (chuckling). We headed to the club, where our friends were already waiting. After introductions, drinks, and dancing, Kuhle decided to visit the restroom, and I went with her. Kuhle: You know I love your brother, right? Me: Yes, I know, Hlehle (chuckling). Kuhle: I want to marry him (laughing) Insert 2 : Me: Really? Kuhle: Yes, but let's get back; they must be waiting for us. **************** The night wore on, around 22:00, an annoying guy named Sisonke approached us, eyeing Kuhle. Me: Not today, please, dude. Sisonke: Oh, I'm not here for you, but for her. Me: You know I have a history of dealing with people like you, right? Sisonke: Sure, but you're just a girl. What can you do? (laughing) Me: Get out of our VVIP space! Sisonke: Alright, but can I have your number? (looking at Kuhle) Kuhle couldn't tolerate it any longer and gave him a thorough beating. He ended up with a bruised eye and fled. We were all shocked. Me: Kuhle, are you okay? Kuhle: Don't worry; I'm used to dealing with guys like him. Let's go before my baby gets worried (blushing). Us: Look at you, blushing! We all burst into laughter. After leaving the club, we all headed home. Kuhle would be spending the night at my house as my brother was planning a surprise party. I also wanted to tell him about Sisonke. Before going to bed, I checked my i********: account, filled with positive feedback on my dancing videos. In the morning: KUHLE The relentless sun disrupted my beauty sleep, and I woke up with a pounding headache. I'm Okuhle Johnson, living with my parents. My younger sister was kidn*pped at birth, which makes me cherish Lisa like a sister, as she reminds me of my lost sibling. Lisa's family is also incredibly kind-hearted. As I was lost in thought, Inga unexpectedly barged into the room, a tray laden with fruits and a diary in his hands. I was so engrossed in my own musings that I hadn't noticed he wasn't in bed. Inga: Good morning, madam. (teasingly) Me: Good morning, sir. (laughing) Inga: Today, I'm taking you shopping before my sister whisks you away. Me: Not to be rude, but I'd prefer to go with my best friend. Inga: That's absolutely fine. (smirking as he'd hoped for that response) Me: Let me savor my breakfast first, and then I'll get ready. Inga: I have somewhere to be. See you later, and please be back by 6 pm. Me: I'll make sure to return early. Inga: Not early, but by 6 pm. You should be waiting at the door. Me: It's a deal. Goodbye. They shared a kiss. I finished my breakfast and began getting ready while waiting for Mbalenhle. She had a habit of running late, and today was no exception. After what felt like an eternity, Mbalenhle entered, slowly adjusting her appearance. Me: You're late, as usual. Mbali: Sorry, Kuhle. I had to doll myself up. (chuckling) Me: Let's not waste more time. We need to be back by 6 pm. (rushing out) Mbali: (following) I know! Me: (shocked) How do you know? Mbali: (nervously) Because you're always early. Me: Fair point. Get in the car. We drove to the mall. *************** LISA Today holds a special significance for Kuhle and my big brother. I can't help but feel an overwhelming happiness for them. Soon, they'll be starting their own family, and it warms my heart. My parents are equally thrilled about the evening's events. My cell phone rings, and it's my classmate Neo. Me: Hey. Neo: How are you doing? Me: Fine, and you? Neo: Great. Me: What's the reason for your call? Neo: I wanted to invite you to a library reading session tomorrow afternoon at 12 pm. What do you say? Me: I'm in, as long as there are some interesting company. (smirking) Neo: (laughing) You know the vibes. He ended the call. It's almost six o'clock, and I'm preparing for the party. I've donned my white shirt, a sharp black suit, and polished Italian shoes. Today, I decided to visit the barber and get my hair trimmed. The night ahead promises to be memorable, celebrating Kuhle and Inga's love and future together.
