The days after Nathan’s return felt heavy. He wanted to spend every moment with Elias, but he could not stop thinking about what Elias’s mother told him.
One evening, Nathan walked to the market. He saw people greeting Elias warmly. Some said, “Thank you, Eli!” Others smiled and waved. Nathan wondered why they seemed so grateful.
When Elias stepped away for a moment, one of the vendors whispered to Nathan, “Your friend is kind. He always helps us. Even when he is sick, he carries crates, fixes roofs, or runs errands. And many times, he gave money to those in need. We don’t know how he managed it, but we are thankful.”
Nathan was surprised. He thought: How could Elias give money when he barely had any for himself?
That night, Nathan searched through Elias’s things, hoping to understand more. In a small wooden box under Elias’s bed, he found letters—his own letters from Manila, carefully folded and kept. But under them were other papers: hospital receipts, unpaid bills, and prescriptions.
Beside them lay a notebook. Nathan opened it and began to read.
“Dear Nathan,
If you are reading this, maybe I am too weak to tell you face to face. I want you to know that I am proud of you. Every peso I earned, I chose to send to you, because I believed in your dream. I gave up my chance for school so you could have yours. Please don’t feel guilty. This was my decision, and I would do it again.
Promise me one thing: live your life fully, not only for yourself, but for others too. That is how you can repay me.”
Tears fell from Nathan’s eyes. His chest tightened. He realized the truth—Elias had given up his own future for him. Every letter, every peso, every smile was part of a sacrifice Nathan had never seen.
Nathan held the notebook close and whispered, “Eli… why didn’t you let me share the burden?”
The next day, Nathan confronted Elias. He showed him the notebook.
Elias looked down, ashamed. “I didn’t want you to know. I wanted you to finish school without worrying about me. If I told you, maybe you would have given up your dream. I couldn’t let that happen.”
Nathan’s tears flowed again. “But Eli, we were supposed to reach the dream together.”
Elias gave a weak smile. “We did. You reached it for both of us.”
Nathan shook his head. “No, Eli. From now on, I will carry the dream for you, not just for me. Whatever happens, I will never forget your sacrifice.”
Elias closed his eyes and whispered, “That’s all I ever wanted.”
That night, Nathan made a decision. He would not let Elias’s story end in silence. He would live a life of purpose, helping others just as Elias had helped him.
For the first time, Nathan understood that true success was not measured only by medals or diplomas, but by the love and sacrifice that carried him there.
