The days passed quickly, but for Elias, each day felt heavier than the last. His body grew weaker, his cough sharper, and his face thinner. Nathan stayed by his side, refusing to leave him alone.
One morning, Nathan tried to convince him.
“Eli, let me take you to Manila. There are better hospitals there. I’ll work hard. I’ll pay for your treatment.”
But Elias only shook his head, smiling weakly.
“No, Nathan. Don’t waste your new life on me. The city is for your dreams, not for my sickness.”
Nathan clenched his fists. “Don’t say that. You’re my brother. If you gave everything for me, then I will give everything for you.”
Elias reached for his hand, squeezing it gently. “You already did, Nathan. Every moment you succeed, every dream you reach—that is enough for me.”
Nathan’s tears fell again. “But it’s not enough for me.”
That night, Nathan sat outside under the stars. He remembered their childhood—running through the fields, laughing on the bridge, sharing pieces of bread in class. He realized how many times Elias had chosen him first before himself.
Nathan whispered to the stars, “Lord, please give me the strength. If I can’t save Elias’s life, then help me honor it.”
The following week, Elias’s health worsened. He could barely walk without help. Nathan stayed close, feeding him, reading to him, and sometimes just sitting quietly by his side.
One evening, as the sun set, Elias asked Nathan to walk with him to the old wooden bridge. Nathan carried most of his weight as they stepped onto the familiar path. The bridge creaked just as it did in their childhood.
Elias leaned on the railing, looking out at the golden rice fields. “Do you remember?” he asked softly. “This is where we dreamed. You said you would cross into a better life. And you did.”
Nathan nodded, holding back tears. “But I didn’t cross alone. You carried me here.”
Elias smiled faintly. “Maybe that was my purpose… to carry you until you could walk on your own.”
Nathan shook his head. “No, Eli. You were meant for more. And I promise, the world will know your story.”
Elias closed his eyes, breathing slowly. “If that’s true, then I am happy.”
Later that night, Elias grew very weak. Nathan stayed beside him, holding his hand tightly. Elias whispered, “Thank you for being my brother. Remember our promise: live not only for yourself, but for others too.”
Nathan’s heart broke. “I promise, Eli. I promise.”
Elias smiled one last time. “Good… then my forever is safe with you.”
And with those words, Elias closed his eyes, his hand slowly becoming still in Nathan’s grasp.
Nathan cried silently, realizing that his best friend, his brother in spirit, had given his last breath with peace in his heart.
