Chapter Eight – Shattered Vows

431 Words
The night was heavy with silence after the storm. Elena stood near the window, her hand pressed against the cool glass, her reflection a ghostly twin staring back at her. Adrian lingered behind her, the air between them thick with words neither had spoken. “You felt it too,” Elena whispered, her voice almost breaking. “That… pull, like it was trying to tear us apart.” Adrian’s jaw tightened, his hands curling into fists at his sides. “It’s the curse, Elena. The closer we get, the more it wants to destroy us.” His voice carried both frustration and fear — emotions he rarely allowed to escape. Elena turned to face him, her eyes burning with defiance. “Then let it try. Adrian closed his eyes, as though surrendering to a truth he had fought for too long. “If I lose you, Elena… there will be nothing left of me.” Her breath caught, a mix of fear and longing. She had waited to hear those words, but now they carried the weight of a vow that could break them both. Before she could respond, a cold gust swept through the chamber, extinguishing the candles. Shadows rose along the walls, shifting like living things. A voice echoed — low, mocking, and cruel. “You think love will free you?” it hissed. “Every vow you make only tightens the chains.” Elena froze, her heart racing. “Adrian… did you hear—?” But Adrian had already stepped forward, his eyes glowing faintly, his voice rough with fury. “Show yourself!” The shadows thickened, twisting into a form that was neither man nor beast, a presence older than time itself. Elena clutched Adrian’s hand, her pulse hammering. For the first time, she realized the curse wasn’t just a weight in their hearts — it was alive. And it was coming for them. --- ✨ End of chapter 8
