Chapter 17 In her dream, James was home. They were in Salem, in their wooden gabled house, in their bed. She was asleep, and James was beside her, reading, or writing, or simply watching her sleep as he would at times. Grace slept in her room, the night passing peacefully into daylight as the white-pink sunlight pierced the dimness. In Sarah’s dream, when she awoke the blackout curtains were drawn, it was cave-black inside the room, and though she couldn’t see James in the darkness she felt him beside her.
