Nigel ventured alone into the dragon’s lair. Hollowed out beneath the engineering marvel his kind had named Phoenix Island, the dead and abandoned swift gate chamber’s featureless grey walls stood dark and cold. Timelessness far beyond the dreams of nenes or men permeated the place that seemed to have no purpose but to intimidate those who intruded on its lonely brooding.
“I come to bargain.”
Desperation brought him here. He had no other moves left. And surrender wasn’t in his nature.
“You are not one of them,” he said, louder. “I propose a bargain.”
A faint glow pulsed from within the wall before him like the eye of a magnificent beast waking from its slumber. Nigel’s skin tingled in awareness of its presence.
“Yes, that’s right,” he soothe
