Gaven crossed the bridge to Dundarien in no great hurry. He leaned his head back and warmed his face in the sun. A plaintive wail overhead brought his eyes open. Bolt’s barred grey and white feathers cut across the clear blue sky as she glided to the rookery tower. Maybe this time, she brought the news he’d been waiting for.
Outside the stable, he untied the fishing creel from his horse’s flank and let a stablehand take her inside. He whistled across the yard to Shaye, one of Captain Royce’s unmistakable brood. The gangly adolescent had the blue eyes of his Rhynn father and his Wodian mother’s tawny skin, the same striking combination all his siblings shared. Shaye roused from his half-hearted chore of wiping down practice blades.
