Angela's Diner

1230 Words
The crowd in the diner wasn’t what I was expecting to see on a weekday. It was loud and busy with the occasional cackling as the TV blared. The waitress face frowned agreeing with the atmosphere around as she rushed back and forth quite content to not visit my table with her note pad gripped tight in her hand. With the amount of times Sweetie had been dropped and the eye gawking even in her clothes, she had to feel naked. At least I had the window by the car park watching the horses pass by it was my get out of jail card.  Normally at this time of day the diner was light, but at the moment I had barely managed to secure this table thanks to Angela, herself. It hadn’t gone unnoticed with complaints and whispers by the men that dominated the diner.  The men were cladded in black leather and tattoos. Bikes littered the front of the parking lot like a parade. It was almost like I brought Barba from one danger to another. Where was the sheriff when you needed him? The diner wasn’t anything special from the faded red chairs I sat. This brown faded table was barely standing, making a squeak if I place too much weight upon it. Underneath was laden of gum showing the legacy of how long this place had been in business. The Mahogany finish was the nicest thing about the diner it made it look rustic if nothing else like the fans or the juke box work. Did I make a mistake in inviting Barba here? When I told Lisa in private about what happened, she went on and on about me not taking enough precautions. It would be funny if it wasn’t so serious that a teenager was lecturing me. This was Barba’s last day I had to make it special for her. I had to make it up to her.  I placed a hand on my forehead and looked out the window of the diner. Was this the best place to meet? What would a city girl think of the Angela Diner? Maybe I should just call her and meet up somewhere else, but where could we go? I got up from the table. The door Ching in response as it opened. Entering through the door was Barba and another woman who seemed to be looking for somewhere to sit. The looks of the men greeted their entrance, and I could understand why. They had foreigner written all over there forehead. The woman beside Barba was pretty but pale, and her hair was in a ponytail. It was long and straight. I had never seen her before was she with Barba or from the city as well although she did dressed as if she was a local. Our eyes met and Barba smiled for a moment as she came across the woman sat on a stool. Reflecting from the table to her, I decided to sit back down and Barba sat opposite beside me. Seeing her outside the hunting ground made me feel underdressed. Did sales make this much money? She still had her eye covered. Was she self-conscious about it? It was so pretty when I saw it, despite what happened. “What?” Barba asked. “Uh?” “You’re staring.” “Sorry, it’s just that I don’t see people dress so well to often. I like your clothes, it really suits you.” Barba smiled and lightly tapped the counter. “Thanks.” She looked around before her eyes fell upon me. “Is this where everyone comes to eat or is this your favorite place to eat in town?”  “Well, I like to come here but normally. It’s not this busy at this time if you want to leave. I can understand.” Barba looked at the menu as the men called across to her. I had put her in trouble again. Damn. “Let’s leave Ba--.” “No, it’s quite fine,” she replied, “What do you normally eat from this menu?” I took the menu from her and place it on the table, moving my hand on the options. “I normally have either hash browns, scramble eggs or some corn meal crusted onion rings. Oh, don’t get the home made burger.” “Alright, I want to have the hash brown,” Barba chuckled, speaking louder and turning her head towards the bar. “I think that’s safe!” “A new face and getting the hash brown!?” I rested my hand on my head not now Angela and turned my face towards the window, trying to get as small as possible. “What’s wrong Diane?” But it was too late a slam came on the table as Angela blocked us in looking us over with a grin wearing her stained chef clothes. “Do I have your attention now, Diane?” I took a deep breath. “Yes.”  “You know she’s been waiting for you’re here for more than an hour.” “Angela---.”  Booking the table and all I wanted to see who this person was, especially since they got you to wear a dress. I thought at first it was a man, but a city girl. I wasn’t expecting that.” Barba smiled, looking at me directly. “Should I take that as a wonderful compliment seems like, she doesn’t do it too often.” “I guess you might take it so, but yes, since your new here. I recom---.” A man stumbled to the table, a beer in hand. “Angela introduced me to one of these fine girls. I could have been the one waiting for your cousin.” “Get lost or I will put you out for a month and talk to your mom about your bad behavior.” The man went quietly to the laughter of the others. So then I recommend Mrs….” “Barba.” “To have the Burger Special Vintage of the house from my parents down and it’s on the house for Diane.” I tried shaking my head a few times to Barba but Angela noticing my behavior give me a slight tap as the door Ching Lisa entered. Lisa strutted across had she just gotten off the farm. She had on a red plaid t-shirt and blue jeans. “So that is one Burger Vintage special hash brown, the usual for you, Diane, and what can I get you Lisa?” Lisa took a seat next to me. Her head bowed almost to the table. “I am sorry, sorry for the other day it doesn’t happen at all.” From Barba’s face, it was easy to see Lisa’s voice was upsetting her. “Lisa, you already apologize yesterday.” “Ok, ok, I just want some scramble eggs Angela.” Angela nodded and left. Damn, maybe I should have left with Barba. I didn’t expect all of this as I looked at Lisa.
