Elena’s POV
I should’ve known Ares would be here. He never misses a chance to gloat and flirt and try to sleep with me…..again. I always turn him down but it doesn’t stop him from ever trying. I was hoping to just come back to wash the blood off of me and head back home. My job was done. The last of the enemies were vanquished for now. I was looking forward to some time off.
“Ares, I should’ve known it was you. I thought I smelled a foul stench of overused Axe body spray in the air”
“Elektra, you haven’t changed not one bit. Still beautiful as ever and sexy. I’m here to congratulate you on your victory.”
“Thank you. I know it has been a long campaign. I was eager to wrap things up so the men could get back to their families. They have been away from them long enough.”
“I knew I left my army is great hands. Although, with how loyal they are to you, I can’t help but wonder if their allegiances still remain with me”
Ares sounded jealous. His men fought for him because they had to. For me, they fought because they wanted to.
“Let’s hope one day we never have to find out. What brings little old you down here. It can’t be just to congratulate me.”
Ares smiled his creepy smile he still thinks is charming. “I’ve been tasked to bring you before the council. They wish to have a briefing before you off on your…..vacation.”
“They tasked you?”, I scoffed and rolled my eyes. The council loved to demonstrate the control they think they have over me.
With a deep sigh, I grabbed my cloak and weapons. I noticed Ares looking at me with amusement. “Let’s get this over with. The sooner the better.”, I said out loud. I grabbed Ares hand and off we went. Within minutes we were transported to headquarters, inside the lost library of Alexandria. It was never lost, it would change locations from time to time. Right now, it was located in the Bodleian.
Some of the Gods and the other supernatural life formed an alliance to keep earth safe from beings and entities who would seek to destroy it. The library just became the headquarters for the council to even on such decisions. All of the information of the world was stored there. It also became neutral ground for meetings and such. It wasn’t a place of power for anyone. The council was made up of different species. Just think NATO but for the supernatural.
Then there’s me. A warrior who makes sure the balance is maintained and fair. Don’t get me wrong, there are some nasties out there who could give even Hitler a run for his money. The council is simply a necessary evil. Do I agree with all of their methods, absolutely not. Still, it gets the job done in order to keep everyone safe. Even the creatures they send me after that have nothing to do with it. I make sure they are able to have a life away the watch of the council.
Ares transported us directly in front of the council. There sat my golden child twin brother, Elliot O’Neill. He was always revered as the most powerful due to him being targeted by the most powerful entity. Because why else would someone powerful target you unless they viewed at a threat, right? He was there as an advisor due to his “experience”
My brother and I relationship is somewhat…..strained. The circumstances of our conception is difficult to understand. You see, Our mother was in love with two men. While she married one, her feeling never stopped for her childhood friend. While we may have the same mother, we do have different fathers. He got our mother’s hazel green eyes and his fathers looks. While I got my father’s dark eyes and majority of his looks. Of course when we found this out, he distanced himself more from me. He even forbade me from using the family name, which was fine by me. I happily took my fathers’ name. That day I became forevermore, Elektra O’Connell. Yeah, mom had a thing for the Os as you can see.
“Hello, brother.” I said teasingly. Knowing it would annoy him. he doesn’t like to acknowledge we are related.
“That’s councilman O’Neill to you, Miss O’Connell.” He spat back at me. I smirked. I knew I was being a b***h but I didn’t care at the moment. I was dragged here against my will. He and the rest of other councils members were all old men who were here since time began. I’m pretty sure they were there when Jesus was graduating from college.
One of them cleared his throat, “If you two want to have a sibling squabble, do it on your own time n or ours! We have work to do. He looked at me. His small spectacle glasses hanging on the edge of his nose. I often wondered if they were going to fall of yet. I would usually make bets in my mind about when they would finally fall off whenever he goes into one of his rants.
“We are satisfied with the outcome of the threat you managed to quell for us. Thank you for you help. You are dismissed.”
I put on a fake smile and say, “I’m glad the council is pleased with my work. Until next time.”
With a solemn nod from them, I back up and turn on my heel. I don’t bow. I bow no man. To me it means a sign of submission, and I would never give them the satisfaction. Especially they are solely responsible for turning my brother against me. Another reason I was keeping the extent of my powers secret from them. They would only use for their gain and marry me off the first person that could keep them in power and maintain a powerful bloodline. They already use me as their secret weapon. I didn’t need them to hold something else over me.
I made my way to Ares to let him know it was time to leave. I once again took his hand and we were transported back to the battlefield where my men were almost done with the cleanup. Ares bid his farewell. I helped my men finish cleanup. That night we toasted to our fallen compatriots. The next morning I made sure everyone got home safely to their families.
It was a long journey home but I had to make sure no one followed me. I get home and open the door. The next thing I hear is the rapid sound of little feet running towards me followed by a force barreling straight to my knees.
“MOM!!! You’re home!”
