Chapter 8: Shadows At The Gate

435 Words
The Dragon Estate was unnervingly quiet at dawn. Too quiet. Liu Xiaoyu stood on the balcony of her room, the city lights of Shanghai fading beneath the morning haze. The wind tugged at her hair, but she didn’t move it out of place. Her instincts prickled—something was coming. A folded note slid under her door. Three words, sharp and deliberate: “They are coming.” Her fingers tightened around it. Her mind raced. She didn’t flinch, didn’t panic. Danger had a rhythm; she could sense it. Liang Zhen appeared behind her without a sound, as if the shadows themselves had carried him. “You received it,” he said, voice low and dangerous. “I did,” Xiaoyu replied, hiding the quickening of her pulse. “They’re testing the wrong person,” he murmured. “Anyone who moves against you… I will eliminate.” She met his gaze steadily. “Then I’ll handle them—with you.” A faint curve of his lips. Approval. Possessive hunger simmered in his dark eyes, and she felt it, a slow heat that spread through her chest. By evening, the estate gates had unusual visitors. A black SUV idled silently outside. Two men in tailored suits observed from the shadows, unblinking. Their presence wasn’t accidental; it radiated threat. “They’re not here for diplomacy,” Xiaoyu said, voice even, calm, but her senses sharpened. “They never are,” Liang Zhen replied, stepping close. His hand brushed hers briefly—not touching fully, but enough to claim the space, enough to remind the world that she belonged to him. A whisper reached Xiaoyu’s allies: “Beware the night… she moves for power.” It wasn’t direct, but she understood. Mei Xinyi was moving pieces in a larger game. The petty schemes of last night were nothing compared to this. Xiaoyu’s jaw tightened. “If she wants war, we’ll give her one she can’t win.” Liang Zhen’s eyes glinted dangerously. “Good. I like it when my wife fights back.” As night fell, shadows crept through the estate. Footsteps echoed where no one should be. Curtains rustled. The SUV’s faint lights blinked in the distance. “You’re not afraid,” Liang Zhen observed, his presence close behind her. “I’m observant,” she corrected. “Good. You’ll need that,” he said softly. “The night is far from over.” She turned slightly, meeting his gaze. In it, she saw warning and promise. Danger and protection. Possession and obsession. And somewhere in the darkness beyond the walls… eyes watched, waiting for the first move.
