Chapter 6: The confrontation

937 Words
The Dragon Estate never truly slept. Even at midnight, the corridors whispered secrets, and the shadows seemed to move with silent intent. I couldn’t stand it anymore. Mei Xinyi. Her teasing. Her smiles. Her insinuations. She had crossed the line one too many times. I found her in the eastern garden, by the koi pond. The moonlight reflected off the water, glinting like shards of glass. She looked up as I approached, her smile calm, polished, almost predatory. “Lin Xiaoyu,” she said, voice soft, almost sweet. “Out for a midnight stroll?” I stopped, taking a deep breath. “No, I’m here for you,” I said, my voice firmer than I expected. Her smile faltered slightly. A flicker of surprise. “I think it’s time we had an honest conversation,” I continued, stepping closer. “About boundaries. About your place here. About Liang Zhen.” Her eyes narrowed, but the smile returned, sharper this time. “Oh? And what would you say to me, little bride? That I should leave? That I have no claim to him?” I clenched my fists. “You’re done testing me,” I said. “I am his wife. I am the one he watches over, the one he protects. You will stop insinuating otherwise.” For a moment, she didn’t move. Didn’t speak. Then, almost laughing softly, she said, “Such fire. I almost admire it. But remember… he notices everything. And sometimes… he enjoys it when you squirm.” My stomach turned. I hadn’t realized… I had been squirming. I had been reacting exactly how she wanted. A shadow moved behind her. A flicker of movement. “Enough.” Liang Zhen stepped forward, his presence filling the garden instantly. Calm. Untouchable. Dangerous. “You will address me respectfully,” he said, voice low, cold. Mei Xinyi froze. “Or what?” she asked, trying to sound confident. He stepped closer, just enough for her to feel the weight of his gaze. “Or you will leave,” he said simply. His tone was calm. Controlled. But the danger beneath it… it was lethal. She swallowed, realizing she had underestimated him. “Fine,” she said finally, voice softer than before. “I… I’ll leave.” And she did, gliding away like a shadow. I exhaled shakily, my hands trembling. “You… you didn’t have to intervene,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. He turned to me slowly, eyes calm, almost unreadable. “I did,” he said softly. “She was testing you. And I do not allow anyone to test what belongs to me.” My heart raced. The calmness in his words belied the obsession behind them, the possessive weight pressing down on me. I wanted to step back, to argue, to resist. But my body betrayed me. He moved closer, silently, his hand brushing mine as he guided me back toward the main estate. Every touch, no matter how small, sent heat across my skin. I wanted to tell him to stop. To push him away. But I didn’t. Back in the estate, the family was restless. Whispers reached my ears about alliances, old grudges, and schemes. An uncle had been plotting subtly, trying to provoke Liang Zhen through me. I realized then: I was not just a bride. I was a pawn, a piece on a chessboard of danger and power. Liang Zhen noticed the tension before I did. He leaned closer as we walked through the hall. “Do not let them see you afraid,” he whispered, voice low and private. I nodded, gripping my dress tightly. In the study later, he shut the door behind us. The room was dark, lit only by the moonlight streaming through tall windows. “You’re stronger than I expected,” he murmured, stepping closer. “Every day, you prove yourself in ways they don’t see… and ways I do.” I looked up at him, my chest tightening. “You… watch me too much,” I said, trying to mask the shiver in my voice. He smiled faintly, calm, dangerous, impossibly close. “Not too much. Just enough.” His hand brushed against mine again, lingering slightly longer this time. A silent claim. A warning. I swallowed hard. “I… I can handle myself,” I said, my voice shaking. “I know,” he said softly. “But I will not let anyone threaten you. Not her. Not the family. Not anyone.” My heart pounded. Possession. Obsession. Danger. Desire. All coiled together in one silent, suffocating presence. Then, a soft sound came from the door. A page, a minor servant, delivering a message about a family meeting tomorrow. Liang Zhen’s gaze didn’t leave me. “I’ll handle it,” he said quietly. “You… stay here. Safe.” I nodded, barely breathing. Safe. From her. From them. From everyone. Safe… because he claimed me. But even as I felt the protection, the obsession, the possessive weight pressing down, a small seed of fear grew. This estate, this family, this marriage… it was a web. And even he, calm and dangerous, could not remove all the traps. As I prepared for bed, I noticed a folded note slipped under my door. In elegant handwriting, it read: “You think you’ve won tonight, bride… but some games have just begun.” I froze. The handwriting was unfamiliar… but the intent was clear. The Dragon Estate’s shadows were deep, and its schemers were clever. And even with Liang Zhen’s quiet obsession, I realized… the danger was far from over.
