Chapter 3: Flirtations And Shadows

717 Words
The morning sunlight spilled over the Dragon Estate, painting the marble floors gold. I had learned quickly: every step here mattered. Every smile, every word, every glance could be a test. Breakfast was quieter than yesterday. The family’s schemers were subtle but present, observing my every move. An uncle commented on my posture; a cousin whispered about Liang Zhen’s previous deals. I nodded, smiled politely, and kept my mind sharp. I couldn’t afford mistakes. And then… she appeared. Mei Xinyi. Her hair shimmered under the light as she walked toward Liang Zhen with that same perfect smile. “Good morning,” she said, voice honeyed, tilting her head as though greeting a lover rather than a new bride. My chest tightened. I reminded myself: she meant nothing. Allegedly. “Xiaoyu,” she said suddenly, leaning slightly closer. “You must be careful around the family. Not everyone is as friendly as they seem.” I nodded slowly, trying to appear composed. “Thanks,” I said, my voice steady despite the flutter in my chest. Liang Zhen’s eyes flicked toward us, calm as ever. But I caught it — that tiny twitch, a subtle narrowing of his gaze. He was watching. Always. Even when he looked like he was not. Mei Xinyi tilted her head, smiling at him. “You two will get along just fine, I’m sure,” she said, her tone teasing. My heart clenched. I forced a polite smile. She was testing me. Everyone here was testing me. After breakfast, I wandered the estate’s library, a place rumored to hold rare treasures and confidential documents. I needed to think. To breathe. To remind myself who I was. “Studying already?” Liang Zhen’s voice was behind me. I froze. “Good morning,” I said carefully, keeping my voice neutral. He didn’t answer immediately. Just observed. His presence was suffocating, and yet… I felt drawn in. “I noticed you’ve been cautious around the family,” he said finally, calm but deliberate. “Of course,” I replied. “They’re not exactly welcoming.” He didn’t smile. He didn’t touch me. But his eyes… they burned quietly, possessively. “You’re sharper than I expected,” he said. “I’ll admit… I enjoy watching you navigate this world.” Heat rose to my cheeks. I looked away, pretending not to notice the intensity behind his calm words. Slow-burn. Always slow-burn. From the corner of my eye, I saw Mei Xinyi glide past the doorway, lingering as if she hadn’t noticed us but clearly had. Her smile was small, knowing, teasing. My chest tightened again. Later, during a meeting with the family elders, subtle sabotage began. A cousin mentioned a minor misstep from my father’s past — framed in a way to make me question my standing. I stayed composed, nodding and replying carefully. Liang Zhen sat beside me silently, occasionally offering a quiet word or glance to correct or support me without drawing attention. I realized then: he was protecting me in ways no one else saw. That night, I walked along the balcony, the city lights of Shanghai flickering like distant stars. Liang Zhen appeared from the shadows, footsteps silent. “You’re learning quickly,” he said softly. I stiffened. “Why do you care?” I asked, voice low. “Because if you fail… I lose,” he replied casually, almost teasing. I blinked. Lose what? My family? Me? His eyes held mine, calm but dangerous, and I shivered. A soft laugh echoed from the corridor. Mei Xinyi. “Don’t work too hard,” she called sweetly, passing by, her eyes glinting. “You wouldn’t want to tire the Dragon Heir’s attention.” Attention. That single word sent a wave of jealousy through me. Liang Zhen’s gaze followed her as she walked away. And then… he turned back to me. “Forget her,” he said quietly. “Focus on surviving here… and on yourself.” I swallowed hard, realizing the slow-burn game had only intensified. He was calm in public, but every word, every look, every gesture told me he was already obsessed. And somewhere in the shadows, schemers waited, testing, planning, plotting. The Dragon Estate was more dangerous than I had imagined. And I was right in the center of it.
