CHAPTER-11 (PART-2)

The Debate Nobody Expected (Part Two) The classroom fell into complete silence. Ara Mitchell's hand remained raised. Even she wasn't entirely sure why she'd raised it. Perhaps it was instinct. Perhaps curiosity. Or perhaps... She simply wanted to know whether her answer was right. Dr. Nicholas Sterling looked directly at her. "Miss Mitchell." "You may answer." Thirty-eight pairs of eyes turned toward her. Ryan slowly whispered, "... This is going to be amazing..." "...or we're about to witness history." Noah nudged him with his elbow. "Quiet." Ara stood slowly. She glanced once at the diagram still displayed on the projector before speaking. "If one receptor malfunctions..." "...the cell may receive incomplete or incorrect information." Her voice was calm. Confident. "It depends on the pathway involved." Nicholas folded his arms. "Continue." She nodded. "If it's part of an immune response..." "...the body might fail to recognize an infection." "If it's related to cell division..." "...the malfunction could cause uncontrolled growth." She paused briefly. "Or..." "...the signal might never reach the target cell at all." Silence. No whispers. No laughter. Only complete attention. Nicholas studied her expression. "You've described the consequences." "What causes them?" Ara thought for a moment. "The signaling cascade." She walked toward the board without waiting for permission. Ryan blinked. "...She's walking to the board." Noah smiled slightly. "I noticed." Ara picked up the marker. Instead of copying the textbook... She drew her own simplified pathway. Receptor. Messenger. Protein activation. Cell response. "If the receptor changes shape..." She tapped the first diagram. "...everything after it changes." "It's like..." She stopped. Searching for an example. "...a domino chain." She drew several tiny dominoes beside the diagram. "If the first domino never falls..." "...the last one never moves." The classroom remained completely silent. Even Ryan looked impressed. Nicholas looked at the board. Then at Ara. "You simplified the concept." She nodded. "It makes more sense that way." Another pause. Finally... Nicholas spoke. "Correct." One word. Nothing more. Yet somehow... It carried far more weight than an entire speech. Ara quietly placed the marker back on the tray and returned to her seat. Ryan leaned toward her immediately. "... Since when do you know all that?" Ara shrugged. "I read." "You voluntarily read biology?" "I was bored." Ryan stared at her. "I watch movies when I'm bored." Noah chuckled quietly. "I think she's been hiding." Mia smiled. "I've always said she was smarter than she lets people believe." Ara pretended not to hear. But somewhere inside... She couldn't deny that hearing "Correct" from Nicholas Sterling felt unexpectedly satisfying. The lecture continued. Students now asked more questions than before. Nicholas answered each one patiently. Not once did he dismiss an incorrect answer. Instead... He guided students toward the right one. By the time the lecture ended... The atmosphere felt different. Not lighter. More... Curious. Nicholas closed his notebook. "For Friday..." "The first draft of your Innovation Challenge proposal is due." A collective groan echoed across the room. Ryan dramatically dropped his forehead onto the desk. "I've experienced happier endings." Nicholas ignored the comment. "As scientists..." "...you will discover that deadlines are less forgiving than examinations." He gathered his journals. "Class dismissed." The room immediately filled with conversation. Students packed their bags. Chairs scraped against the floor. Ryan stretched dramatically. "I need food." "You always need food," Logan replied. "My brain burns calories." "It burns excuses." The group laughed as they stepped into the busy corridor. Outside... Blackwood University was alive once again. Students hurried toward different departments. Some carried guitars. Others balanced art portfolios. The basketball team jogged across the sports field while the university choir rehearsed beneath the shade of an enormous oak tree. Near the Student Activities Center... Large posters had appeared overnight. Bright red letters caught everyone's attention. BLACKWOOD INTER-UNIVERSITY DEBATE CHAMPIONSHIP Represent Blackwood University Registration Closes Tomorrow Winning Team Receives National Qualification A crowd had already gathered around the noticeboard. Ryan squinted at the poster. "No." Noah looked confused. "What?" "They expect people to argue professionally." "People already argue professionally." "They call it social media." Logan laughed. Mia folded her arms. "I actually love debates." Ara looked at her. "You would." "You should join." Ara almost laughed. "Absolutely not." "Why?" "I hate standing in front of people." Ryan nearly dropped his backpack. "...You?" "The girl who argued with Dr. Sterling?" "I didn't argue." "You absolutely argued." "I had a conversation." Noah smiled. "With attitude." "Details." Mia stepped closer. "You'd be good." Ara shook her head. "No chance." Before anyone could continue... A familiar voice interrupted them. "I agree." The group turned. Standing behind them was Leo Bennett, the Student Council President. Tall. Well-dressed. Always carrying an easy smile. His blazer bore the university crest, and a stack of event folders rested beneath one arm. Ryan whispered, "Great." "The celebrity has arrived." Leo ignored him. His attention remained on Ara. "You should register." Ara crossed her arms. "You don't even know me." Leo smiled. "I know enough." "You challenged one of Blackwood's strictest professors." "You ask good questions." "And..." He pointed toward the science building. "...Professor Hawthorne mentioned your name this morning." Ara frowned. "He did?" "He said Blackwood needs students who aren't afraid to think differently." For the first time... Ara looked genuinely surprised. Ryan leaned toward Noah. "...Today's getting weird." Noah nodded. "Very." Leo handed Ara a registration form. "No pressure." "But I think you'd surprise yourself." He gave the group a polite nod before walking away to speak with another group of students. Ara stared at the form in her hands. Then... Without a word... She folded it. And slipped it into her backpack. Mia noticed. "You kept it." "I'm throwing it away later." Ryan grinned. "Sure you are." Far above them... From the second-floor balcony of the Biomedical Sciences Building... Nicholas happened to glance down toward the courtyard. His eyes drifted briefly over the students gathered around the debate poster. He saw Team Seven laughing. He saw Leo Bennett speaking with them. And he noticed... For the first time... Ara wasn't the loudest person in the group. She was listening. Quietly. Thoughtfully. He looked away after only a moment. But something about the morning lingered in his thoughts. The rumours surrounding Ara Mitchell painted her as reckless. Yet twice now... She had surprised him. Perhaps... There was more to her than the stories people told. And somewhere inside the Research Centre... A hidden door clicked open once again. Someone was still searching for Project Helix. Someone who knew Blackwood University far better than anyone suspected.
