More Than Just Rumors
The morning sky above Blackwood University was unusually clear.
Sunlight spilled across the ancient stone buildings, making the ivy-covered walls glow a rich emerald green. Students filled the cobblestone pathways, some rushing to lectures, others lingering with coffee in hand.
Somewhere in the distance, the university bell rang.
Another ordinary day had begun.
Or so everyone believed.
Biomedical Research Hall
Room 301 buzzed with conversation as every research team worked on ideas for the Blackwood Innovation Challenge.
Whiteboards were already covered in equations, diagrams, and colorful sticky notes.
Team Seven...
Looked completely different.
Ryan had somehow turned a laboratory stool into a "captain's chair."
"I officially declare this..."
He spun around dramatically.
"...the headquarters of Team Seven."
Noah sighed.
"You've been captain for exactly thirty seconds."
"And already we're failing."
Logan laughed.
"Can someone take his chair away?"
"I'm emotionally attached to it now."
Mia uncapped a marker.
"Can we please focus?"
Ara walked over to the whiteboard.
She stared at the list they had written yesterday.
Cancer Detection.
Portable Medical Devices.
Mental Health.
Artificial Intelligence.
Nothing felt right.
She quietly erased everything.
Ryan gasped.
"You erased my masterpiece."
"The coffee robot?"
"It had potential."
"It had caffeine."
For several moments...
No one spoke.
Ara picked up the marker again.
Instead of writing a title...
She drew a small circle.
Then another.
Connected them with arrows.
Noah watched carefully.
"What are you thinking?"
Ara didn't answer immediately.
She continued drawing.
Finally, she stepped back.
"What if..."
She looked around the table.
"...instead of solving a huge medical problem..."
"...we help doctors detect infections earlier."
Silence.
Mia leaned forward.
"Go on."
Ara pointed at the sketch.
"Many infections become dangerous because they're detected too late."
"What if we designed a low-cost screening concept that rural clinics could use?"
"It wouldn't replace laboratory tests..."
"...but it could identify patients who need urgent treatment."
Ryan frowned.
"So..."
"We're helping doctors decide who needs more testing?"
Ara nodded.
"Exactly."
Logan slowly smiled.
"That's actually brilliant."
Noah stood up.
"Wait..."
He grabbed another marker.
"If we combine that with digital reporting..."
"...clinics could send the information directly to hospitals."
Mia immediately began writing notes.
Ryan looked around the table.
"Am I the only one who suddenly feels underqualified?"
Everyone laughed.
For the next hour...
Ideas filled the whiteboard.
Flowcharts.
Possible materials.
Cost estimates.
Research articles.
For the first time...
Team Seven wasn't arguing.
They were creating.
A soft knock interrupted them.
Dr. Emily Carter stepped inside.
She walked from table to table, listening more than speaking.
When she reached Team Seven...
She stopped.
Her eyes scanned the whiteboard.
She smiled.
"This is different."
Ara looked up.
"We wanted something practical."
Emily nodded.
"And practical ideas often change most lives."
She noticed several scientific references already listed.
"You've done your homework."
Ryan proudly pointed at Noah.
"He did."
Noah looked at him.
"We all did."
Ryan cleared his throat.
"I emotionally supported the research."
Emily laughed.
"I'll count that as teamwork."
A few minutes later...
Another familiar figure entered the room.
Dr. Nicholas Sterling.
Unlike yesterday...
He didn't immediately begin walking.
Instead...
He quietly observed every team from the doorway.
His attention eventually settled on Team Seven.
Not because they were loud.
For once...
They weren't.
He walked over.
The students immediately straightened.
Nicholas looked at the whiteboard.
His eyes moved across the diagrams.
The notes.
The medical references.
The proposed screening system.
He picked up one sheet of paper.
"Who suggested this concept?"
No one answered immediately.
Ryan looked at Ara.
Mia looked at Ara.
Logan smiled.
Noah folded his arms.
Finally...
Ara spoke.
"I did."
Nicholas looked at her.
For a brief moment...
Neither of them said anything.
Then he asked...
"Why this problem?"
Ara answered without hesitation.
"Because expensive technology isn't useful if people can't access it."
The room fell completely silent.
Nicholas nodded once.
"A reasonable answer."
He studied the proposal again.
"You've identified the correct problem."
He looked directly at the team.
"Now prove your solution is possible."
With that...
He placed the paper back on the table.
And walked away.
Ryan blinked.
"Did..."
"...did he just compliment us?"
Noah smiled.
"In Professor Sterling language..."
"...that was practically a standing ovation."
The room burst into laughter.
Even Ara smiled.
Not because she'd won an argument.
But because, for the first time...
She felt seen for something other than her attitude.
Elsewhere...
Deep inside the Biomedical Research Centre...
A computer screen flickered to life.
A folder labeled...
Project Helix
...was copied onto a small black flash drive.
A pair of gloved hands removed it.
The screen went dark.
The figure disappeared into the empty corridor.
Outside...
The sound of students laughing echoed across the campus.
Inside...
Someone had just stolen information worth millions.
And nobody knew...
The danger was already much closer than they imagined.
