I awoke to the smell of coffee. Dark roast coffee. I'm not sure how I knew that, but it had a pungent, acidic smell. My body hurt all over and I assumed it was from sleeping on the hard, thin bed of the cell. I hadn't quite opened my eyes yet when I realized I was not on the hard mattress in the cell. It felt like I was lying on a cloud. I frowned, trying to remember what happened. Was all of that just a dream? "Please be in my room", I mumbled to myself as I opened my eyes. I definitely wasn't in my room.
"I wasn't sure you were ever going to wake up", James' voice sent chills down my spine. I locked eyes with him and scrambled backward to get some distance between us. A had a splitting headache and my neck and shoulder, where his Lycan tore into me, throbbed. "I'm so glad to see you're alive my little mate", James said with a smile, not at all offended at my reaction. "I am not your mate. I'll never be your mate. If that's what you were hoping for, you should have just killed me", I said, coldly. James looked hurt for a second but recovered quickly. "If you don't accept me, you'll die anyway", he warned.
I was well aware of what was coming my way. Anyone marked by a Lycan turns into a Lycan. If you were not fated to that Lycan and you don't accept them as your mate, you will eventually be poisoned and die a slow death. Most agree just to stop the agony. I, however, don't care. I'd rather die than have the beast that murdered my mother. When I didn't say anything, James sighed and left the room. I was just beginning to enjoy my new-found solitude when James walked back into the room with Jaekob at his heels. I narrowed my eyes at them both.
I want to tear their throats out.
I was a little surprised by my hostile thought. Wait, that wasn't my voice.
You're right, that is my voice. I am your Lycan, Morrighan. Though, I prefer Morri.
Hi Morri. It sucks that this is the circumstances we are meeting under. I could feel her internally nod her head. It was a foreign feeling. One I can't say I didn't like. I liked this powerful feeling I had now that I was a Lycan. When I came out of my head, Jaekob was no longer in the room. James was just staring at me. "What?" I demanded. He looked down at his hands as they fidgeted, "My Lycan wants to meet yours", he said, sheepishly.
"You and your Lycan can go to hell", I spat. James' eyes flashed black and he lunged for my throat. Without thinking, I raised my hand to stop him with my magic. To my surprise, he not only stopped, but he was thrown against the far wall. A vicious growl left his throat and I found myself listening to his Lycan's voice as he ushered a warning. "Either you submit, or you die. I have wanted you for a very long time, but don't think I won't kill you for being ungrateful", he said through clenched teeth.
Fuck that guy. Morri growled. Yeah, f**k that guy. I decided to test my luck. With a flick of my wrist, I knocked him off of his feet. With another flick of my wrist, I knocked a dresser over on top of him. It was exhilarating. My magic is so much stronger now that there are two souls connected to my body instead of one. An enraged roar sounded before a white hot pain seared into my neck and shoulder where the mate marking was. I writhed in pain for what felt like an eternity before the pain subsided and, with it, the scar James' Lycan left. I sat up, blinking.
What the hell just happened? I asked Morri. The mate bond is broken. James is dead. But we didn't do that. Snide laughter brought me out of my head. "You are worth so much more to me now. I truly thought you'd die from the transformation. But to think you'd survive, and keep your powers? You'd be worth a fortune on the black market as a weapon", Jaekob said while all but rubbing his hands together. Much like a fly would before a meal.
"You can go to hell too!" I yelled as I raised my hands to gather up magic. I want to blast him back to hell where he crawled out of! Only when I released my magic, nothing happened. An evil grin broke out on Jaekob's face. "I had an acquaintance make this for me on the off chance you did survive and kept that magic of yours. Vile thing, this magical device, but it works, so I guess I'll need to send a thank you to its maker", he purred while admiring the necklace around his neck.
That bastard. I really don't like werebears. They're always so snide, thinking they're mightier than us Lycans. They think they're so smart. Morri ranted. Honestly, I wasn't particularly fond of them myself. Much like goblins, they're an acquired taste. "So what, you kill James and think that I'll just willingly become a weapon for you?" I asked, making air quotes around the word weapon. "I don't care if you're willing or not. I have my ways of making you submit. I find the idea of lying with you revolting, so I'll just resort to beating you into submission. You can't use your magic on me, and until the full moon, you can't shift for the first time. I have another three weeks before then. Should be plenty of time", Jaekob smiled cruely.
I don't like the idea of that. I can heal us, but that's about all I can do right now. Morri's warning put me on high alert. I can handle some pain, but how much can I take? Not exactly a question I was looking to have answered. I glanced down at the body of James' Lycan. He was lying limp in a pool of his own blood. His side was sliced open where Jaekob essentially gutted him. I couldn't help the smile that pulled at my lips. Good. He got what he deserved. I'm kind of side I'm not the one who did it myself.
I glanced up at Jaekob who was looking at me with a raised eyebrow. "Are you going to come willingly down to the cells or will I have to knock you out?" Jaekob asked, suspicious of my sudden good mood. I rolled my eyes. Of course he's going to put me back down there. Treat me like a prisoner and still expect me to cooperate. Bloody i***t. Fine, I'll bide my time for now. Three weeks. We can hold out that long, right?
I climbed down off the bed and stepped over James' Lycan's body, deliberately stepping in his blood, and walked passed Jaekob out of the room. I'll track this as far as I can just to piss Jaekob off. If he wants to be a d**k, I'll be one right back. I giggled to myself internally. Jaekob snorted in annoyance and walked behind me as I led the way to the stairs. I went to walk down them and Jaekob stopped me. "You'll be in different cells this time. They're a little further down the corridor. So follow me", he said, stepping in front of me. I followed him down the stairs and down the corridor past my old cell.
I stopped in front of it and glanced at the blood still on the floor. My blood. I gingerly touched my neck, still expecting to feel the rough skin of the scar James left there. It was smooth, like nothing ever happened. Jaekob cleared his throat, bringing me out of my thoughts. I turned away from the cell and continued to follow him until we stopped in front of a row of large relatively private cells.
These must be the VIP cells. Morri commented, sarcastically. Jaekob stopped at one of the cells and pulled a large key from his pocket and unlocked the cell. He went inside, trusting that I'd follow. I stepped in after him and was surprised by how different this was from the other. The bed, while small, looked clean and comfortable with a pillow and a blanket. There was a bathroom area that could only be seen if in the cell, for privacy. A desk and chair sat at the other end of the cell with an oil lamp sitting on top of the desk. There was even a metal chest at the foot of the bed. It almost looked like a hotel room.
"The bars are made of silver. Since the transformation is complete, you'll need to be housed here. I will provide two meals a day and weekly clothes/towel refreshment. If you behave, I may even bring a TV or something down here", he said as he walked out of the cell. "Why are you suddenly... nice?" I asked, skeptical. He did, after all, just threaten to beat me into submission. He also made it very clear he hated witches. "You're not a witch anymore. You have magic, yes, but you're not a witch. You're a Lycan, and a magic possessing Lycan is useful to me", he said with a shrug as he closed and locked the cell door. "I'll have Kit bring your dinner. You'd do well to behave, he's not so... forgiving", he said with a wave over his shoulder.
I watched him walk away and around a corner before I turned around to inspect my new digs. I walked into the bathroom area and was pleasantly surprised. There was a standup shower and a toilet, and the sink had a cabinet underneath. I opened the cabinet to find a few rolls of toilet paper, some cleaning supplies and some hygiene products for the shower and a brush. Oh good, we get to clean the cell too, Morri said, sarcastically. I glanced in the mirror. "Damn, I look rough", I said, while turning my head from side to side. I guess turning into a Lycan and being locked up, drugged and physically abused will do that to you.
I left the bathroom and walked over to the chest at the end of the bed. Opening it, I found towels, and a couple changes of clothes that I assume will fit. If he really is going to sell us on the black market, we need a plan to get the hell out of here. I am not trying to be sold as someone's weapon. Morri was practically pacing in my head. It was giving me a headache. Hey, Morri, I want out of this situation as much as you do, but can you dial it back a notch? I'm not used to sharing a body, so you're giving me a headache with all this mental pacing. I sighed.
Oh, right. It's been a while since I had to as well. Sorry, but we really need to come up with a plan. She wasn't wrong, but how would I even begin to try and escape? I think we need to bide our time and look for an opening. I think I finally memorized the halls with all the turns so I can probably make it outside. But without being able to shift, I wouldn't be fast enough to get away if they shifted and came after us.
Morri pondered that for a minute while I continued to look around the room. I think you're right. Buy as much time as possible until we can shift and then get the hell out of here. I guess just do whatever you have to so he thinks you're going to cooperate. I nodded. I gave up in my search of a way out and laid down on the bed. It wasn't as comfortable as the one I woke up in this morning, but it was certainly more comfortable than the one in the first cell I was in. It'll do.
I must have dozed off because I was woken by the lock opening in my cell. It was Kit bringing down my dinner. He glared at me and hurriedly placed the tray on my desk before scurrying back out of the cell and slamming the door shut behind him. I never moved from my spot on the bed until he was out of sight. I quickly ate my food. I was so hungry I barely tasted it, though what I did taste was good. I decided to get some sleep and start the day early tomorrow.
