CHAPTER TWENTY A Curly CrisisLane released Kit after taking her statement. Part of Jerry’s delay had involved dashing to the second-hand shop attached to the church to grab clothes for her. She squirmed in the front seat of his car wearing a tee shirt which smelled of someone else’s sweat, and a pair of shorts discarded by an eight-year-old. “Sorry I took so long.” Jerry shot her a sideways glance as he pulled away from the curb outside the police station. “Langdon made me turn my phone off before the funeral.” Kit snuffed out a soft laugh. “It’s fine, Jerry. I didn’t know who else to call. Perhaps I need to pay a retainer for a local lawyer.” She sighed. “Lane seems keen to put me behind bars at some point in my future.” “Na.” Jerry shook his head, and his curls gave a gentle bounce.
