Chapter 6
Scene I
One week later, Mrs. Young arrived at Bryan and Mirabel's home. Both of them were delighted to see her.
Bryan and Mirabel were sitting on the balcony, enjoying the cool breeze and admiring the beautiful afternoon, when they suddenly heard a knock at the gate.
Mirabel: I think someone is at the gate.
Bryan: Let me check.
(Bryan stood up, and Mirabel followed him.)
Mirabel: You're not going alone.
(They opened the gate and were pleasantly surprised to see Mrs. Young standing there with a warm smile.)
Mirabel: Mummy!
(She immediately knelt down to greet her.)
Mrs. Young: My daughter, get up. There's no need for that.
(Bryan hugged his mother warmly.)
Bryan: Mum! It's so good to see you.
Mrs. Young: My son! You've grown even more handsome. I can see Mirabel is taking very good care of you.
Bryan: (smiling) As you can see, Mum.
Mrs. Young: That's wonderful.
(They all walked into the house together.)
Mirabel: Mummy, let me take your luggage upstairs.
Mrs. Young: Thank you, my dear.
(Mirabel carried her mother-in-law's bag to the guest room. A few minutes later, she returned to the sitting room.)
Mirabel: Mummy, what would you like to eat? And what would you like to drink?
Mrs. Young: My dear, don't tell me you're going to start cooking without asking me properly first.
Mirabel: (smiling) I just wanted to make sure I prepared exactly what you wanted.
Mrs. Young: Alright then. Just make my usual meal.
Mirabel: Okay, Ma.
(As Mirabel walked toward the kitchen, Bryan stood up to follow her, but his mother stopped him.)
Mrs. Young: Silly boy, come here.
Bryan: (laughing) Mum, what did I do this time?
(She gently pulled his ear, making him laugh.)
Bryan: Okay, okay! I'm sorry. But what did I do wrong?
Mrs. Young: Tell me, how did I get here?
Bryan: Wait... don't tell me you travelled all the way from Abuja without calling me. I would have come to pick you up.
Mrs. Young: Exactly! That's why I called you a silly boy.
Bryan: (laughing) Alright, Mum. So, where's your car?
Mrs. Young: It broke down on my way here.
Bryan: Really? Didn't it show any signs before now?
Mrs. Young: Not at all. It was working perfectly this morning.
Bryan: I hope it's safe.
Mrs. Young: Yes. My driver will bring it here after it's repaired.
Bryan: That's good to hear.
Mrs. Young: Where's my daughter?
Mirabel: I'm here, Mummy.
Mrs. Young: Bring the food before I become too hungry.
Mirabel: Right away, Ma.
(A few minutes later, Mirabel served the meal. The three of them sat together, eating, laughing, and sharing stories.)
Narrator: The afternoon ended with laughter, smiles, and a peaceful family meal. But unknown to Bryan and Mirabel, Mrs. Young's visit would soon put their marriage through its greatest test.
The light fades.Scene II
It was a sunny Saturday afternoon.
Bryan had gone out to run an errand, leaving Mirabel alone at home with Mrs. Young.
Mirabel was sitting quietly in the lounge with her earphones on, listening to music and relaxing after a long week at work. Suddenly, she heard someone shouting her name.
Mrs. Young: Mirabel! Mirabel! Where is this girl?
(Mrs. Young continued calling angrily as she walked toward the lounge.)
As soon as she entered the room, Mirabel quickly removed her earphones and stood up.
Mirabel: Mummy.
Mrs. Young: Are you deaf? Didn't you hear me calling you?
Mirabel: I'm sorry, Ma. I was listening to music.
Mrs. Young: Keep your apology to yourself!
Mirabel: Mummy, did you need anything?
Mrs. Young: Yes. Go and gather all my dirty clothes and wash them immediately.
Mirabel: Ma... with all due respect, I don't think I can do that.
Mrs. Young: What did you just say?
Mirabel: My hand is still injured from the accident at the hospital yesterday. Besides, we have a maid who can help with the laundry.
Mrs. Young: So you can't wash my clothes?
Mirabel: No, Ma. Not because I don't want to, but because my hand hasn't healed yet.
Mrs. Young: Hmph! Tell me, how are you different from the maid in this house?
Mirabel: Ma...
Mrs. Young: Yes! Since you can't even give my son a child, what exactly are you useful for?
(Mirabel's eyes immediately filled with tears.)
Mirabel: Mummy... are you calling me barren?
Mrs. Young: Yes! You've been married for years and still no child. Yet all you know is work, work, and more work!
Mirabel: Mummy, please don't say that. Yesterday, you saw my injured hand. I got hurt while trying to save the life of a mother and her baby.
(She struggled to hold back her tears.)
Mrs. Young: That's exactly your problem! You can save other people's children, but you can't have one of your own.
Mirabel: Mummy... being a surgeon is my profession. I have sworn to save lives.
Mrs. Young: Maybe that's why God has refused to give you your own child.
(Mirabel wiped away her tears.)
Mirabel: Mummy, I have always respected you. Please don't say such hurtful things to me.
Mrs. Young: Don't call me "Mummy"! I'm not the mother of a barren woman!
(A heavy silence filled the room.)
Mirabel quietly picked up her handbag, phone, and car keys.
Without saying another word, she walked toward the door.
Mrs. Young: Go if you want! And don't bother coming back!
(Mirabel stepped outside with tears streaming down her face, entered her car, and drove out of the compound.)
Mrs. Young stood at the entrance, hissing in annoyance as she watched the car disappear down the road.
Narrator: For the first time since their marriage, Mirabel left home with a broken heart. Little did she know that Bryan was about to discover the painful truth.
The light fades.Scene III
Meanwhile, Mirabel checked into a nearby hotel. She locked herself in her room and broke down in tears. The hurtful words Mrs. Young had spoken kept replaying in her mind.
As she sat on the edge of the bed crying, she suddenly heard a knock on the door.
Knock! Knock! Knock!
Mirabel: I'm coming.
(She quickly wiped the tears from her face and walked to the door. Thinking it was room service, she opened it—only to find Bryan standing there.)
Mirabel: Bryan... what are you doing here? How did you know I was here?
Bryan: Baby... please calm down. I know everything. I'm so sorry.
Mirabel: I don't want to hear anything. Just leave.
Bryan: Please... I'm begging you. I'm sorry.
Mirabel: Bryan, please leave!
(She burst into tears and pushed him away.)
Mirabel: I don't want to see anyone right now!
(Bryan gently held her hands.)
Bryan: Baby, please listen to me. We can get through this together.
(Mirabel broke down crying and rested her head on his chest.)
Mirabel: I'm so hurt... I don't even know what to do anymore.
(Bryan wrapped his arms around her.)
Bryan: I'm sorry. I should never have left you alone with her. I promise I'll never let anything like this happen again.
Mirabel: No... don't blame yourself. She's your mother, and she'll always be your mother.
Bryan: I know she's my mother, and I'll always respect her. But you're my wife, and it's my duty to protect you.
(Mirabel looked into his eyes and smiled faintly.)
Mirabel: I still believe she can change. By God's grace, everything will be alright.
Bryan: I hope so.
(He gently looked at her injured hand.)
Bryan: How's your hand now?
Mirabel: It's getting better.
Bryan: Are you coming home today?
Mirabel: No... I don't think I'm ready yet.
Bryan: Then I'll stay here with you tonight.
Mirabel: No, Bryan. You should go home. She'll be worried.
Bryan: Right now, my place is with my wife.
(Mirabel smiled.)
Mirabel: Okay... if you insist.
Bryan: That's better. Now let me cheer you up.
Mirabel: (smiling) And how do you plan to do that?
Bryan: First, we'll order your favourite food. Then we'll watch a movie together until you smile again.
Mirabel: Thank you... I really needed that.
(They ordered dinner, talked for a while, and watched a movie together. For the first time since leaving home, Mirabel smiled again.)
As the night grew late, they both fell asleep peacefully.
Narrator: Although Bryan and Mirabel found comfort in each other's company, the wounds in their hearts had not yet healed. Back at the house, Mrs. Young had already made up her mind that Mirabel would never remain her daughter-in-law. Little did they know that this was only the beginning of an even greater storm.
The light fades.Scene IV
The next morning, the bright rays of the sun streamed through the hotel window. Mirabel slowly opened her eyes and found Bryan still asleep beside her.
She smiled softly and gently brushed his hair with her fingers.
Mirabel: (whispering) Thank you for always standing by me.
(Bryan slowly opened his eyes.)
Bryan: Good morning, my beautiful wife.
Mirabel: Good morning, baby.
Bryan: Did you sleep well?
Mirabel: Much better than yesterday.
(Bryan sat up and held her hands.)
Bryan: Baby, I don't want you to worry anymore. Whatever happens, we'll face it together.
Mirabel: Thank you. Having you by my side gives me strength.
Bryan: We'll go home today, but I promise you one thing.
Mirabel: What's that?
Bryan: No one will ever make you feel unwanted in our home again. I'll always protect you.
(Mirabel smiled as tears gathered in her eyes.)
Mirabel: I love you so much.
Bryan: I love you more.
(They embraced each other.)
Meanwhile, at the house...
Mrs. Young sat quietly in the sitting room, thinking about everything that had happened the previous day.
Mrs. Young: Hmph! That girl thinks she can take my son away from me. Never! As long as I'm alive, she will never have peace in this house.
(She folded her arms with a determined look on her face.)
A few moments later, Bryan and Mirabel arrived home.
As soon as they entered the house, an uneasy silence filled the atmosphere.
Mrs. Young looked at Mirabel without saying a word, while Mirabel politely greeted her.
Mirabel: Good morning, Mummy.
Mrs. Young ignored the greeting and walked away.
Bryan looked at Mirabel with concern and gently held her hand.
Bryan: Don't worry, baby. Everything will be alright.
(Mirabel forced a smile, but deep down she knew that the battle had only just begun.)
Narrator: Sometimes, the greatest battles are not fought with weapons but with words, patience, and love. Would Mirabel's kindness eventually melt Mrs. Young's hardened heart, or would the family be torn apart forever?
The light fades.
