Chapter 1: Scene I
On Monday morning, Mirabel woke up early and quickly got ready for school. She put on her school uniform, black skirt, white ankle socks, and sneakers. She was happy and excited because it was her first day at Diamond International School in Abuja. However, she also felt a little nervous because the environment was still new to her. She prayed that she would make friends easily and settle into her new school quickly.
At exactly 7:00 a.m., she picked up her phone and called her driver to come and pick her up. She then went downstairs to the kitchen, packed her lunch, and headed outside.
When she arrived at the school, she admired the calm and beautiful environment. However, there were only a few students around because she had arrived too early. As she strolled around the school compound, she met a neatly dressed and polite girl named Princess. They exchanged greetings.
Princess: Hi.
Mirabel: Hello.
Princess: I'm Princess.
Mirabel: I'm Mirabel, but my friends call me Mira. If you like, you can call me Mira too.
Princess: Okay, nice meeting you.
Mirabel: Nice meeting you too.
Princess: Can we be friends?
Mirabel: Of course! By the way, which class are you in?
Princess: I'm in SSS 3A.
Mirabel: Really? That's my class too!
Princess: That's great! What's your seat number?
Mirabel: Number 5.
Princess: I'm number 6! We'll be sitting together.
Mirabel: Wow! That's amazing. Can I ask you a few questions?
Princess: Sure. Go ahead.
Mirabel: I noticed that there aren't many students in the school compound. I remember the principal telling my parents and me that this school has a large number of students.
Princess: Yes, that's true.
Mirabel: Whenever my parents and I came here before, there were always many students around.
Princess: Well, Mira, the school officially opens at 9:00 a.m. Classes begin at 10:00 a.m., and school closes at 4:00 p.m. That's why only a few students are here now.
Mirabel: Oh, I understand now. But why did you come so early today?
Princess: During the holidays, a letter was sent to my parents informing them that some students would represent the school on the first day of resumption. I'm one of those students.
Mirabel: Oh, I see.
Princess: Bye for now. We'll meet again in class.
Mirabel: Bye.
(Princess walked away.)
Mirabel: Wow... she's such a nice girl. (She smiled.)
A little while later, Mirabel went to her classroom, attended her lessons, and returned home after school.Chapter 1: Scene II
The next day, Mirabel left for school at about 8:35 a.m. and arrived at 8:50 a.m. As she was about to enter her classroom, she met Princess standing at the door.
Mirabel: (Smiling) Good morning, Princess.
Princess: Oh, Mira! Good morning. How was your night?
Mirabel: It was good. How about yours?
Princess: Mine was great.
Mirabel: Would you like to take a walk around the school with me?
Princess: Of course!
Mirabel: Let me quickly drop my bag in the classroom. I'll be back in a moment.
(Mirabel went into the classroom, dropped her bag, and returned a few moments later.)
Mirabel: Let's go!
(As they strolled around the school compound, they met Brayan.)
Brayan: Hello, girls.
Princess: Hi.
Mirabel: Hello.
Brayan: How are you both doing?
Princess: We're fine. (Turning to Mirabel.) Mira, meet our Senior Boy.
Mirabel: Oh, it's nice to meet you.
Brayan: The pleasure is mine.
Mirabel: I'm Mirabel.
Brayan: I'm Brayan. So, how are you settling into the school? I hope you're enjoying the friendly atmosphere here.
Mirabel: Yes, I am. Thanks to God and Princess, I'm settling in quite well. I really like the school.
Brayan: I'm glad to hear that. Actually, I have a request. May I go ahead?
Princess: What is it?
Brayan: Calm down, Princess.
Princess: Okay, sir.
Mirabel: Go ahead.
Brayan: Would you mind talking with me for just a minute?
(Brayan glanced at Princess, and she signaled with her eyes for Mirabel to go with him.)
Mirabel: Hope I'm safe?
Brayan: (Smiling) Of course you are.
(They walked a short distance away and stopped under a large mango tree.)
Brayan: I'd like to know more about you.
Mirabel: I'm Mirabel Augustine. I live in Abuja with my parents and my younger sister.
Brayan: That's nice. I'm Brayan Young. I also live here in Abuja with my parents and my younger sister.
Mirabel: That's wonderful.
Brayan: I have another request.
Mirabel: What is it?
Brayan: Would you like to have lunch with me tomorrow at the cafeteria?
Mirabel: Sure. But I'll most likely come with Princess. Is that okay?
Brayan: Of course. She's welcome too.
Mirabel: Alright then.
Brayan: One more thing... I hope I'm not disturbing you.
Mirabel: Not at all.
Brayan: May I have your phone number?
Mirabel: Sure.
(She gave him her phone number.)
Brayan: Thank you.
Mirabel: You can also message me on w******p.
Brayan: I will. Thanks.
Mirabel: Bye.
(Brayan waved goodbye and walked away. Mirabel returned to Princess.)
Princess: So... what did he say?
Mirabel: (Laughing as she imitated him.) He wanted to know more about me after introducing himself. He said I was pretty, invited me to have lunch with him tomorrow, and asked for my phone number.
Princess: That's all?
Mirabel: Yes. What else were you expecting?
Princess: Nothing... I was just wondering.
Mirabel: Hmm? (Smiling.)
Princess: And why are you smiling like that?
Mirabel: Why do you care?
Princess: So you don't want to tell me? Am I not your friend anymore?
(Mirabel simply smiled without saying a word.)
Princess: Anyway, will you come with me to the cafeteria tomorrow during lunch?
Mirabel: What for?
Princess: I want to meet someone.
Mirabel: Who?
Princess: That's none of your concern. So, are you coming or not?
Mirabel: Stop being dramatic. I'll come on one condition.
Princess: What's the condition?
Mirabel: You'll also come with me tomorrow.
Princess: Deal. I promise.
Mirabel: That's why I love you.
Princess: Love you too!
(The two friends laughed together as they walked back to their classroom.)
Chapter 1: Scene III
The following day, Brayan and Mirabel met at the school cafeteria during lunch break.
Brayan: Hey, good afternoon.
Mirabel: Hello.
Brayan: Please, have a seat.
Mirabel: Thank you.
Brayan: What would you like to drink?
Mirabel: Hollandia is fine.
Brayan: (Calling the waiter.) Please bring us one Hollandia and two glasses.
(A few moments later, the waiter returned with the order.)
Brayan: Thank you.
(Turning to Mirabel.)
Brayan: Mira... Mira...
Mirabel: Yes?
Brayan: Who were you talking to? I called your name several times, but you didn't seem to hear me.
Mirabel: Oh, I'm sorry about that.
Brayan: It's alright.
Mirabel: So... can we continue?
Mirabel (Aside): I wasn't chatting with anyone. I was actually admiring his profile picture on w******p.
Brayan: Mira...
Mirabel: Yes?
Brayan: I... I don't really know how to say this.
Mirabel: What is it? I hope nothing is wrong.
Brayan: No, nothing is wrong.
Mirabel: Then go ahead.
Brayan: Promise me you won't be angry.
Mirabel: I promise.
Brayan: Mira, you see... I mean...
(As Brayan struggled to find the right words, Mirabel looked around and noticed that a few students had started paying attention to them.)
Mirabel: Just say it. You're making me feel embarrassed.
(Brayan looked around. When he noticed that everyone had gone back to their conversations, he took a deep breath.)
Brayan: Mira...
(He paused for a moment.)
Brayan: I love you.
(Mirabel burst into laughter.)
Brayan: Why are you laughing? Did I say something funny?
(Mirabel didn't answer immediately.)
Brayan: I swear, I'm serious. I'm not joking.
Mirabel: (Still smiling.) You really made me laugh. Is this what you've been trying so hard to say?
(Brayan lowered his head shyly.)
Mirabel: I can't give you an answer right now. You know... matters like this shouldn't be decided in a hurry. I need some time to think about it.
Brayan: That's okay. I'll wait for your answer.
Mirabel: Thank you for understanding.
Brayan: I just hope your answer will make me smile.
Mirabel: (Smiling.) We'll see.
(The two of them laughed softly as they continued talking and enjoying their drinks.)
