The packhouse was dead silent.

200 werewolves were still staring at Margaret like she was a disease. And maybe she was.

Karl could feel the Elders’ eyes burning holes into his back.

*"She’s my mate,"* he said again, louder. *"The Moon Goddess chose."*

Margaret just smiled and waved. *"Hi guys. I accept bitcoin and love."*

Before anyone could react, it hit.

Pain.

Like someone was dragging a hot wire through Karl’s chest, straight to his bones.

He staggered.

Trouble gasped. Her knees buckled.

*"What the f—"*

The mate bond was trying to snap into place.

For Karl, it felt like his wolf was clawing out of him to get to her.

For Margaret, it felt like her chest was being ripped open and filled with someone else’s heartbeat.

She hated it.

She hated that for 2 seconds, she forgot how to lie.

She hated that she could suddenly _feel_ him. His rage. His exhaustion. His 10 years of loneliness.

*"Don’t touch me!"* she snapped, even as her body leaned toward him.

Karl caught her before she fell. His hands were big, warm, and they didn’t let go.

*"Breathe,"* he growled in her ear. *"Fight it and it hurts more."*

The whole pack watched their Alpha cradle a scammer on the floor.

After 5 minutes that felt like 5 hours, the pain dulled to an ache.

A silver thread now connected their wrists. Only they could see it. Mate bond.

Trouble pulled away fast. Her face was pale.

*"Rule 3 just changed,"* she whispered. *"You can touch me. I guess."*

Karl stood up, pulling her with him. His voice was low, for her ears only.

*"You ran from me for 10 years. You’re not running anymore."*

The Elders cleared their throats.

*"Alpha. With respect. We need to do a background check. And a purity test."*

Trouble laughed. Loud.

*"Purity test? Bro, I scam people for a living. I failed that test in 2016."*

Karl squeezed her hand. Once.

*"No tests,"* he told the Elders. *"She’s under my protection. House rules still apply."*

As they walked inside, Trouble whispered:

*"So... does the bond mean you can feel it when I lie?"*

Karl looked at her.

*"Yes."

*"s**t," she muttered. *"This is gonna be a problem.
