MY MATE IS A SCAMMER
CHAPTER 5: PACK RULES
The next morning, 6:00 AM.
Karl was already dressed. Full black suit. Alpha energy.
Margaret was in his hoodie, eating cereal straight from the box, scrolling on the iPhone he bought her.
*"We have training,"* Karl said.
*"We have Netflix,"* Margaret replied without looking up.
Karl sighed. The bond was already buzzing. She was annoyed. He was tired.
*"Pack rules, Margaret. Rule 1: Respect the Elders. Rule 2: No stealing from pack members. Rule 3: No lying in council."*
Margaret finally looked up.
*"ThisRule 4: No fun?"*
*"That’s implied."*
---
Training ground. 30 werewolves watching.
*" is how we shift,"* Karl demonstrated. Bones cracked. In 3 seconds he was a massive black wolf.
The pack bowed.
Margaret clapped slowly. *"10/10. Very demonic. Can I try?"*
*"You’re not a wolf,"* Karl shifted back.
*"Exactly. So I go do my own thing."*
She pulled out a deck of cards. *"Who wants to play poker? I promise I won’t scam you. Much."*
3 betas lost ₦200k in 20 minutes.
Karl found her later in the kitchen, making jollof at 2PM.
*"You’re supposed to be in etiquette class."*
*"And you’re supposed to be in a meeting. Yet here we are."* She offered him a plate. *"Peace offering. Try it."*
He did. It was perfect.
The bond warmed. For a second, he saw her through it: a 12-year-old girl scamming to feed her little brother.
Margaret saw it too. She froze.
*"Don’t,"* she whispered. *"Don’t look at me like that."*
*"Like what?"*
*"Like I’m not just a criminal."*
Silence. Only the sound of the pot bubbling.
Karl set the plate down.
*"House rule update,"* he said quietly. *"Rule 4: You don’t have to lie to me."*
Margaret laughed, but it was shaky.
*"That’s the worst rule yet, Alpha."*
That night, she didn’t run.
She stayed in the guest room. And for the first time in 10 years, Karl didn’t sleep alone with his wolf howling.
The bond hummed between their rooms. Annoying. Warm. Dangerous.
