Chapter 10: The Alpha Before the First Moon

3969 Words
The stranger wore Kael's face. Not the face of the ruthless Alpha who commanded the Nightfang Pack. Not the face of the man who had kissed Seraphina beneath a dying moon and promised to find her in every lifetime. This face was older. Its features carried the weight of forgotten kingdoms, and its silver eyes held the terrible stillness of someone who had watched entire worlds rise and fall. He stood beneath the shattered moonlight as though the laws of existence had been written for his convenience. Kael drew his sword. "Who are you?" The stranger smiled. "You ask that question every time." "Then perhaps you should give me an answer worth remembering." Seraphina moved beside Kael, her fingers brushing his wrist. She could feel his tension. But something else troubled her. The stranger's presence did not feel entirely foreign. There was no hostility in the mate bond, no warning from her instincts. Instead, she felt an impossible sensation. Recognition. As though some forgotten part of her soul had been waiting for this man to appear. The stranger looked at her. "Seraphina Veyne." She raised her chin. "You seem to know me." "I knew you before you had a name." "How romantic. Unfortunately, I'm already taken." Kael glanced at her. "Now?" "What? I can be polite and suspicious at the same time." The stranger laughed. For the first time, genuine amusement crossed his face. "Still the same woman." Seraphina's smile disappeared. "Stop saying that." "Why?" "Because I am not the woman you remember." The stranger's expression softened. "No," he agreed. "You are not." He looked toward Kael. "And neither is he." Kael's sword remained raised. "Enough riddles." The stranger extended his hand. "Very well, Alpha. Let me show you what you have forgotten." The world went white. And Kael remembered the first moon. ### 1. Before Werewolves Had Names There had been no kingdoms. No castles. No vampires lurking beneath crimson skies. And no wolves howling at the moon. There had only been an endless wilderness beneath a silver sky. Kael stood in the center of that wilderness, wearing armor made from dark metal and starlight. A silver sword rested in his hand. He was not yet the Alpha of the Nightfang Pack. He was something older. Something that existed before the first pack had ever gathered around a fire. Across the valley stood a great black wolf, its eyes shining like twin stars. The wolf lowered its head. Kael understood without words. The creature was not his enemy. It was the last guardian of the first world. Kael approached it and placed his hand against its forehead. Silver light flowed between them. And the wolf spoke. You will carry my blood. Kael felt the power enter his soul. You will protect the boundary between life and death. The vision changed. Kael stood before a vast doorway filled with silver light. Beyond it lay a place where every memory ever created floated like stars across an endless ocean. A woman waited beside the doorway. She had long white hair and eyes like dying suns. The First Mother. But she was younger than Kael had ever seen her. Her face carried no cruelty. Only sorrow. "You must guard this place," she told him. Kael looked through the doorway. "What lies beyond it?" "Everything that has ever been." "And what must I protect it from?" The First Mother turned toward the darkness beyond the stars. "Everything that refuses to end." A terrible sound emerged from the doorway. Something moved in the distance. Something vast enough to swallow the stars. Kael tightened his grip on his sword. "What is it?" The First Mother lowered her eyes. "Eternity." The vision shattered. Kael staggered backward, gasping. Seraphina caught him. "Kael!" He clutched her arm. "I remember." His silver eyes searched hers. "I remember the first world." The stranger nodded. "At last." Kael turned toward him. "Who are you?" The stranger's expression became solemn. "I am the first guardian of the boundary. The first wolf. The soul from which every Alpha descended." He placed a hand against his chest. "And I am the man you were created to replace." Silence fell over the balcony. Seraphina stared at him. "You're saying Kael is your reincarnation?" "No." The stranger shook his head. "Reincarnation is a convenient word for something far more complicated." He looked directly at Kael. "I gave you my blood. The First Mother gave you a fragment of my memory. And Eternity gave you the burden of repeating my mistakes." Kael's jaw tightened. "What mistakes?" The stranger looked toward the city below. "Believing that protecting the world meant controlling what happened to it." ### 2. The First Betrayal The stranger led them to the edge of Evermere. Beyond the city stood a forest of enormous silver trees. Their branches reached toward the sky, and their leaves shimmered with memories. As Seraphina approached, she saw images moving across the bark. A child learning to walk. A king placing a crown on his daughter's head. A woman embracing her dying husband. Every tree contained a life. Every leaf held a moment that had once mattered to someone. Hope walked beside Seraphina, her broken crown resting in her hands. "What is this place?" "The Forest of Beginnings," the stranger answered. "Every life that enters the world leaves a memory here." Hope stared at the trees. "Then the people who died aren't gone?" "No." The stranger knelt beside her. "But neither are they trapped here. Their memories remain, while their souls are free to move beyond what you can see." Hope looked uncertain. "Can I see them?" "Sometimes." "Can I bring them back?" The stranger gently shook his head. "Not without taking something from the living." Hope lowered her eyes. Seraphina put an arm around her daughter. The stranger watched them for a moment. Then he turned toward Kael. "Do you want to know why the curse began?" Kael nodded. "Yes." The stranger touched the trunk of a silver tree. A vision appeared. The First Mother stood before the doorway of memories, holding a small glowing heart. The first soul stood beside her. And between them was a child. Aurelia. Hope's first existence. The child laughed as the first soul lifted her into his arms. The First Mother watched them with an expression of unbearable love. Then the first soul turned toward the doorway. "I must return." The First Mother seized his hand. "No." "I cannot remain here forever." "You promised me a world." "I gave you one." "And now you want to leave it?" The first soul's expression softened. "I want to become part of something greater than myself." The First Mother shook her head. "Then I will make you stay." She raised the glowing heart. The doorway began to close. The first soul struggled. The stars went dark. And from the space between the closing doors, Eternity emerged. The First Mother screamed. The first soul reached for her. But the darkness swallowed him. Aurelia cried out. And the world broke. The vision disappeared. Kael stood motionless. "So she created the curse because she refused to let him go." The stranger nodded. "But that was only the first betrayal." Seraphina frowned. "What do you mean?" The stranger looked at Hope. "After the first world collapsed, Aurelia made a choice. She divided her soul so that the new world could exist without being consumed by Eternity." Hope stared at him. "I divided myself?" "Yes. One fragment became the soul that would eventually awaken inside Seraphina. Another became the bloodline that would lead to Kael. And the last remained with you." Hope looked at her parents. "Then we're all part of the same soul?" "Not entirely. You are separate people. You possess your own hearts, your own choices, and your own futures." The stranger smiled faintly. "But your souls were shaped by the same beginning." Seraphina's expression hardened. "Then why did the First Mother make us kill each other?" The stranger's face darkened. "Because she feared what would happen if you remembered that you could choose differently." He looked at Kael. "She turned love into a weapon." Then at Seraphina. "And made sacrifice appear inevitable." Finally, he looked at Hope. "She believed that if she controlled the beginning and the ending, she could prevent every loss." Hope stared at the silver trees. "But she only created more suffering." "Yes," the stranger said. "That is the tragedy." ### 3. The Alpha's Choice That night, Kael could not sleep. He stood alone on the balcony of the tower, watching the silver moon rise above Evermere. For the first time in his life, he understood that his existence had been shaped by a purpose he had never chosen. He had been born to guard a boundary. He had inherited the blood of the first wolf. He had been drawn to Seraphina because their souls were connected to an ancient prison. And every lifetime, he had been expected to repeat the same sacrifice. He heard footsteps behind him. Seraphina joined him at the railing. "You look like a man planning to do something stupid." Kael glanced at her. "That's a very broad accusation." "I've had a thousand years to study you." She stood beside him. For a while, they watched the moon. Then Kael spoke. "What if the stranger is right?" "About what?" "About me being created to replace him." Seraphina turned toward him. "You're not a replacement." "I carry his blood." "You also steal blankets, argue over breakfast, and have an infuriating habit of pretending you don't need anyone." He raised an eyebrow. "Those are hardly defining qualities." "They're yours." Her expression softened. "You are Kael Blackthorn. You are the man who learned to love me without demanding that I belong to him. You are the father who held Hope when she was afraid. And you are the man who keeps choosing to stand beside me even when the past tells you to run." She took his hand. "Whatever came before you, that is who you are now." Kael looked down at their joined fingers. "What if my purpose is to guard the boundary?" "Then guard it." "What if I'm supposed to return to the first world?" "Then you can decide whether you want to." He looked at her. "You would let me go?" The question hurt. But Seraphina answered honestly. "I would hate it." She squeezed his hand. "I would probably spend the rest of my life looking for you." A faint smile touched his face. "But if you chose to leave," she continued, "I would not turn my love into a chain." Kael's expression changed. He understood what she was offering. Not permission. Not indifference. Freedom. The one thing their previous lives had never allowed them to give each other. He lifted her hand and kissed it. "I don't want to leave." Seraphina smiled. "Good." "You're very demanding." "And you're very fortunate that I'm beautiful." He laughed. Then he pulled her close. For a moment, they stood beneath the moon, holding each other without a curse telling them they had to. Kael rested his forehead against hers. "I choose you." Seraphina's eyes glistened. "Even without the bond?" "Especially without the bond." She kissed him. And somewhere in the Forest of Beginnings, a silver tree began to bloom. ### 4. The Keeper's Warning The next morning, the stranger summoned them to the tower. Hope sat beside a window, studying her broken crown. She had barely spoken since the previous night. Seraphina sat beside her. "What's troubling you?" Hope turned the crown over in her hands. "If I can create worlds, why can't I fix this one?" Seraphina brushed her daughter's hair away from her face. "Because creating something and controlling it are different things." Hope sighed. "I thought I could make everyone happy." "I know." "But people are still suffering." "Yes." Hope looked toward the city. "Then what's the point of having all this power?" Seraphina took her hand. "Power gives you the ability to change things. It doesn't guarantee you'll know the right thing to do." Hope stared at her. "How do you know?" Seraphina smiled sadly. "I don't." She kissed Hope's forehead. "I'm still learning." The stranger entered the chamber. He looked toward the horizon. "The boundary is weakening." Kael rose immediately. "Explain." "Evermere has changed the laws that once separated life, death, and memory. The first soul was released when the old world ended, but the boundary has not yet settled." Hope stood. "Is that my fault?" "Not entirely." The stranger approached the window. "When you created Evermere, you gave the dead a place to be remembered. But you also brought together powers that have never existed in the same world before." Seraphina frowned. "What powers?" "Creation. Destruction. Memory. And the freedom to choose." The stranger looked at Hope. "Your power can sustain the world, but only if you stop trying to make it perfect." Hope lowered her eyes. "What happens if I don't?" The stranger did not answer immediately. Then he said, "The boundary will collapse." Kael's expression hardened. "And what happens then?" The stranger looked toward the silver moon. "Everything that has ever ended will return." Silence filled the room. Seraphina stared at him. "Every dead soul?" "Every forgotten memory. Every abandoned possibility. Every version of the world that was never allowed to exist." Hope's fingers tightened around her crown. "Would that be so terrible?" The stranger looked at her. "Some of those possibilities ended for a reason." He turned toward Seraphina. "And some of the things that return may not wish to remain as memories." A distant bell rang. The tower trembled. And from beyond the city came a sound that made the stranger go pale. A wolf howling. Not one wolf. Thousands. Kael stepped toward the window. Across the northern horizon, an army of enormous silver wolves emerged from the forest. Their eyes glowed like stars. At their head rode a woman in black armor. Seraphina recognized her immediately. Elara Blackthorn. Kael's mother. The woman whose coffin had been opened beneath Blackthorn Castle. The woman who had supposedly died a thousand years ago. And behind her marched an army of the dead. ### 5. The Return of the Dead The city gates opened without anyone touching them. The silver wolves entered Evermere. People fled into their homes. The marketplace emptied. The Keeper's guards formed a line before the tower. But Elara raised one hand, and every weapon in the city fell to the ground. She dismounted. Her dark armor gleamed beneath the moon, and a silver crown rested upon her head. She looked toward the tower. "Kael." Her voice carried across the city. Kael stepped onto the balcony. For a moment, he could not speak. His mother looked exactly as he remembered her from the coffin. Beautiful. Proud. Terrifyingly alive. "Mother?" Elara smiled. "My son." Kael gripped the railing. "You were dead." "Yes." "How are you here?" Elara's smile faded. "Because someone has finally opened the door." The stranger stepped onto the balcony beside Kael. Elara looked at him. Her expression changed. "You." The stranger bowed his head. "Elara." She laughed bitterly. "Still pretending you can save the world?" "I never claimed I could." "No. You merely watched it burn." Kael looked between them. "How do you know each other?" Neither answered. Elara turned toward the city. "I have returned for what was stolen from my bloodline." Seraphina stepped onto the balcony. "What was stolen?" Elara looked at her. "Freedom." She pointed toward Hope. "The child has created a world where death is forbidden, but the dead have not been released. They have been gathered here, trapped between existence and memory." Hope's face paled. "That's not true." Elara's expression softened slightly. "Little princess, look at the army behind me." Hope looked. The silver wolves were not alone. Behind them stood thousands of people. Soldiers. Kings. Children. Mothers. Lovers. All wearing the faces of the dead. All staring toward Evermere. "They have been waiting for a thousand years," Elara continued. "Waiting for someone to open the boundary." Kael looked at the stranger. "Is she telling the truth?" The stranger nodded slowly. "Part of it." Elara's eyes flashed. "Only part?" She raised her hand. A vision appeared above the city. The First Mother stood before the doorway of memories, holding the glowing heart. But behind her stood another figure. A man with Kael's face. He was driving a silver blade into the first soul's chest. Seraphina gasped. Kael stumbled backward. "No." Elara looked at her son. "You were not merely the guardian." Her voice became cold. "You were the one who betrayed him." The stranger closed his eyes. For the first time, he looked ashamed. Kael stared at the vision. "I don't remember." Elara stepped closer. "Of course you don't." She lifted her hand. "Because the First Mother erased the memory of your first betrayal." The image changed. The first soul fell to his knees. The First Mother screamed. And Kael stood over them, holding the silver sword. Then the vision disappeared. Kael looked at Seraphina. His eyes were filled with horror. "Did I do that?" Seraphina reached for him. Before she could answer, Elara spoke again. "Yes." She looked at her son. "And this time, you will remember why." ### 6. The Truth Behind the First Death The stranger stepped toward Elara. "Enough." Elara turned toward him. "You have no right to silence me." "I have every right." "Then tell them the truth yourself." The stranger said nothing. Elara laughed. "Of course. You would rather let them suffer than admit what you did." Seraphina moved between them. "Both of you stop." The two ancient beings turned toward her. She raised her chin. "I am tired of people appearing from nowhere, telling me what my family did a thousand years ago, and expecting me to accept their version of events." She looked at Elara. "If Kael betrayed the first soul, explain why." Then she looked at the stranger. "And if he was framed, prove it." Neither answered. Seraphina's eyes began to glow red. "Or I will find the truth myself." Elara studied her. Then, slowly, she smiled. "You truly are her daughter." Seraphina's expression hardened. "Whose daughter?" Elara looked toward the silver moon. "The woman who first created the boundary between life and death." The stranger closed his eyes. "No." Elara continued. "Not the First Mother. Not the ancient queen who raised the curse. The woman who existed before them all." She pointed toward Seraphina. "You." Silence swallowed the balcony. Seraphina stared at her. "What?" Elara's voice became almost reverent. "The first soul was divided into three fragments. One became the child who would become Hope. One became the guardian who would become Kael. And one became the soul that would eventually become you." She stepped closer. "You were not created by the First Mother." Seraphina's heart hammered. "You were the part of the first soul that chose to remain behind." Kael looked at Seraphina. The stranger lowered his head. And suddenly, the impossible pieces began to fit together. The First Mother's obsession with controlling Seraphina. The power hidden inside her. The ancient voice in her heart. The reason Eternity had been imprisoned within her soul. Seraphina was not merely the vessel. She was part of the being that had created the boundary in the first place. But Elara was not finished. She looked toward Kael. "And you, my son, were the one who destroyed it." Kael's sword slipped from his hand. The sound of metal striking stone echoed across the balcony. Seraphina caught his arm. "Kael?" He stared at the stranger. "Tell me she's lying." The stranger's expression was full of sorrow. "I cannot." Kael went still. The mate bond between him and Seraphina pulsed once. Then a memory erupted inside both their minds. A battlefield beneath a silver moon. A door made of stars. Kael holding the first soul's heart. Seraphina screaming his name. And a promise spoken in a voice neither of them recognized. If you destroy the boundary, I will find you in every world. The memory vanished. Seraphina clutched her chest. Kael fell to his knees. And Elara whispered the final truth. "You did not kill the first soul to save the world, Kael." She looked directly into his eyes. "You killed him because you wanted to become him." ### 7. The Wolf Who Chose Love For a long time, Kael could not move. He knelt on the balcony, staring at the silver sword lying beside him. He remembered holding it. He remembered the first soul's face. He remembered the door. But he did not remember wanting to become the first soul. That possibility horrified him more than the accusation itself. Because he knew what it meant to want power. He had spent centuries commanding the Nightfang Pack, making decisions that determined who lived and who died. He had believed that strength meant carrying the burden alone. What if the stranger was right? What if, before he became the man Seraphina loved, he had been a man who believed he deserved to rule the world? Seraphina knelt beside him. "Look at me." He shook his head. "What if I did it?" "Then we'll find out why." "What if I wanted his power?" "Then we'll discover what changed." "What if nothing changed?" Seraphina took his face between her hands. "Then you will still have a choice now." He looked at her. She brushed a tear from his cheek. "You are not obligated to repeat every terrible thing you have ever done." Kael's voice broke. "What if I become that man again?" Seraphina leaned forward until her forehead touched his. "Then I will remind you of the man who asked my permission before kissing me." A faint, broken laugh escaped him. "The standards are remarkably low." "They're actually very high. You'd be surprised how many people fail." He closed his eyes. For a moment, he leaned into her touch. Then he whispered, "I love you." Seraphina kissed him. "I know." The mate bond pulsed. A warm silver light spread between them. And the sword on the floor began to melt. Not into fire. Into water. The silver liquid flowed across the stone, forming a circle around them. Elara stepped backward. The stranger stared. Hope moved toward the balcony doors. "What is happening?" Seraphina looked down. The liquid silver reflected a sky that no longer existed. A sky filled with two moons. And beneath those moons stood three figures. Seraphina. Kael. Hope. But they were not alone. Behind them stood the first soul. And beside him was a woman whose face looked exactly like Seraphina's. The reflection raised its hand. A voice emerged from the silver circle. "THE FIRST BETRAYAL WAS NOT COMMITTED BY KAEL." The entire city fell silent. The voice continued. "THE FIRST SOUL CHOSE TO DIE." Elara's expression changed. The stranger stepped forward. "No." The silver circle began to glow. "AND THE ONE WHO KILLED HIM WAS THE WOMAN HE LOVED." Seraphina stared at the reflection. The woman with her face lifted a silver dagger. Then the vision shattered. The silver liquid vanished. And somewhere beyond the boundary, someone began to laugh. Not the First Mother. Not Eternity. Someone else. Someone who had been waiting since before the first moon. END OF CHAPTER 10 ### Coming Next: Chapter 11 — The Woman Who Killed the First Soul Seraphina's forgotten identity begins to emerge, revealing a connection to the first soul that neither she nor Kael could have imagined. Elara's army of the dead demands freedom, while Hope discovers that restoring the boundary may require a sacrifice no one has considered. And as the silver moon darkens, the stranger finally reveals why he has spent eternity hiding the truth about Seraphina's first death.
