Elara had loved before. or at least, she thought she had.
That love had been loud and demanding. Full of promises that faded with time. she had learned how easy it was to give your heart away, and how painful it was to gather the pieces back.
So she was careful not.
she told herself that Julian was just a customer. A familiar face .A pleasant distraction in the rhythm of her days.
But then there were the moments she couldn't explain .
like the way she felt disappointed on morning he didn't come in .
Or how she caught herself saving the last clean mug she knew he liked.
Or how his smiles lingered with her long after he left .
One evening. Just before closing, Julian stayed behind while the cafe emptied out.
"long day"? he asked.
She sighed, wiping the counter. " long life".
He laughed softly. " That bad ?"
"Not bad", she said ." Just --- unfinished".
He considered that . "Maybe that's not a bad thing".
She looked up at him. "How so?".
"If it's unfinished" he said gently."it means there's still more to write".
something in his world settled deep inside her, like a truth she didn't known she was waiting to hear.
When Julian finally stood to leave, he hesitated.
"Elara?"
" Yes?"
" Would you like to get coffee with me sometimes ,She almost laughed." You're asking the Batista out for coffee".
He smiled, a little shy. " I figured you might enjoy not making it for one ".
Her heartbeat a little faster. Fear whispered caution. memory warned her to be careful
But curiosity - hope, turned page
"I'd like that", She said.
Julian's smiled widened, brighter than the cafe lights . "Me too".
As he walked out into the evening, Elara watched the door close behind him.
She didn't know where this story would go she didn't know how many chapters it would take .
But for the first time in a long while, she was ready to keep reading.
