RIVALRY IGNITES

The morning air at Crestwood Academy was unusually crisp, carrying the distant buzz of gossip before we even set foot on campus. I knew something was about to go wrong the moment I stepped onto the first set of marble stairs. Bianca Vale. She was leaning against the railing near the entrance, arms crossed, and her trademark smug smile plastered across her perfect face. She’d been waiting. And judging by the way she was scanning the crowd, she was looking for me. “You again,” I muttered under my breath, gripping my bag tighter. Her smile widened. “Good morning, princess. Did you sleep well, or are you still thinking about your little mat victory last week?” I rolled my eyes. “You mean the match where I destroyed Daniel? Yeah, I think about it every night.” Her expression flickered for just a second — annoyance? Jealousy? Something dangerous. --- Confrontation in the Hall She stepped closer, voice dripping with fake sweetness. “You know, you should really stay out of my way. Some people can’t handle losing to… someone like you.” “Someone like me?” I raised an eyebrow. “Care to explain what that means?” Before she could answer, a shadow fell across us. Daniel. He stepped between us, arms crossed, jaw tight, eyes practically glowing with that warning glare that said don’t even think about it. “Bianca,” he said slowly, voice low and dangerous. “Back off.” Her eyes widened, and she smirked through gritted teeth. “Oh, so now he’s your bodyguard too? How cute.” I smirked. “Don’t flatter yourself. He’s just scared of getting hurt.” Daniel’s eyes flicked to me briefly, then back to Bianca. “I’m not scared of her. But I am protective of someone who actually matters.” The words hit like a punch in the chest. Bianca took a step back, suddenly realizing she might have underestimated us. --- The Cafeteria Incident By lunchtime, word had spread about the hallway confrontation. Students whispered excitedly, some snapping photos with their phones. Bianca, of course, wasn’t done yet. She cornered me near the cafeteria line, pretending to trip into me. “Oh! So clumsy today, huh?” she teased. I froze for just a second — and that was all Daniel needed. He appeared beside me like a shadow, body tense, ready to strike. “You okay?” he asked quietly, one hand brushing lightly against my elbow. “Yes,” I said, though my heart still raced. Daniel stepped closer to Bianca, tone dangerously smooth. “Walk away. Now.” She blinked at him. “Or what?” He leaned in just enough for her to feel the weight of his presence. “Or you’ll regret it.” That was all it took. Bianca’s smirk faltered. She muttered a hiss of annoyance and stalked off, her heels clicking like angry drumbeats. I glanced at Daniel, noticing the faint smirk tugging at his lips. “You know,” I muttered, “you’re insufferable.” He shrugged. “And yet, you still look at me.” I rolled my eyes, muttering something under my breath. But deep down, I knew — he was right. --- The Aftermath The rest of the day was a blur of stares, whispers, and little smirks from students who had clearly caught the tension between Daniel and me. That night, Daniella found me in her room, pacing. “Okay… what just happened today?” “Bianca tried to humiliate me,” I said. “But Daniel… he—” “You mean your annoying, infuriating, teasing disaster of a brother?” she interrupted. “Yes! That’s exactly what I mean. He’s… protective. But also… ugh, why do I even care?” Daniella smirked knowingly. “Careful, you’re about to fall for him.” I groaned. “I don’t like him.” But the truth? I couldn’t stop replaying the hallway scene in my head — the way he stepped in, the way his gaze made everything else disappear. Something was changing between us. Something I wasn’t ready to admit.
