Elizabeth Gurney was born in 1780 in Norwich, England—the fourth of twelve children. Her life was that of any other growing child until she turned seventeen years old. At that time, she experienced a tremendous spiritual illumination that was to guide her destiny for the rest of her life.
In 1800 she married Joseph Fry, a member of a prominent and wealthy family. However, society life was not for Elizabeth, for at this time, she started on a lifetime career of prison reform.
