Through the years, Christian women have played major roles in bringing the word of God to the peoples of all lands. One prime example was Elizabeth Fry, who accomplished greater prison reforms than any other woman in history. Kings asked for her counsel, and her influence spread through the world. Elizabeth Gurney was born in 1780 in Norwich, England—the fourth of twelve children. Her life was that of any other growing child until she turned seventeen years old. At that time, she experienced a tremendous spiritual illumination that was to guide her destiny for the rest of her life. In 1800 she married Joseph Fry, a member of a prominent and wealthy family.
