Lyra’s POV
The world slowed as Kade stepped forward, his eyes locked on mine like a predator that had finally cornered its prey and wouldn't show mercy. My heart was slamming against my ribs like it was going to break anytime soon. I had imagined facing him again a thousand times, but never like this.
Blood dripped from his dagger, staining the floor between us as he smirked looking straight into my eyes.
"You really thought you could escape me, Lyra?" His voice was a low growl, but it was deadly quiet, he kept Coming closer to me.
Darius was already moving closer to him, too, with a blur of motion in his step; he knew what Jade was about to do; he blocked his path, his muscles coiled like a predator ready to strike. “Touch her, and I’ll rip you apart.”
Kade’s lips curled into a sneer and then he laughed wickedly. “Brave words from a fallen Alpha,” he murmured to Darius.
I barely had time to react before Kade lunged over, his blade was flashing under like a firelight. As both came face to face, the force of it sent a gust of wind through the room, and I staggered back, my breath coming in short gasps, this was leading to something unpredictable.
A warrior stormed in behind Kade, heading straight for me.
My instincts screamed.
For the first time in my life, I didn’t hesitate. I wasn’t the weak Luna anymore. The man threw his punch toward my face, his knuckles almost brushing my cheek, but I dived in time. I grabbed a broken chair leg and whacked it into his ribs while spinning. Despite his groan, he didn't fall. Rather, he took hold of my wrist and twisted it till my arm began to hurt.
I held back the scream and slammed my knee into his stomach. He stumbled, releasing his hold just enough for me to struggle away. I snatched the dagger on his belt and stabbed him in the thigh without hesitation.
He howled and collapsed on the floor.
My palms were coated with blood, as I glanced down at him, my chest quickly rose and sank. Did I just… fight back?
No time to think.
I turned, my gaze locking on Darius and Kade as they clashed in a violent blur. Darius was holding his ground, but Kade fought like a man possessed, every move fueled by hatred.
Then I saw it, Kade wasn’t here alone. More of his men were charging in. We were outnumbered.
I spun toward the door. We needed to run.
But then I saw him.
A man stood in the hallway, watching the chaos with a satisfied smirk. My stomach dropped.
Caleb.
My own pack’s Beta. Kade’s second-in-command.
For a minute, I could only gaze at him “You?” My voice was hardly audible.
His smirk widened. “Come now, Lyra. Did you really think I’d let you live after betraying your pack?”
Betraying them? I had been the one discarded, the one rejected and exiled. My hands tightened into fists, wrath swelling like a tempest within me.
"You did this," I replied as the truth hit me. “You helped Kade track me.”
Caleb chuckled. “Of course. He promised me the Beta position in Shadowfang once Darius is dead.”
Darius?
I whipped around just in time to see Kade land a brutal punch against Darius’s ribs, making him stagger. Blood dripped from his temple, but he didn’t fall.
He was losing.
I had to do something, the strength awakened in me
A scream built inside me.
I did not know where it had come from. I had no idea why it seemed like something inside me was splitting open. But suddenly, the room felt different.
The air surrounding me sniffed, causing me to feel electric and heavy as if a storm was forming beneath my skin. I experienced a profound, primal feeling that I had never felt before.
Caleb stepped back, his smirk faltering. “What the hell,”
But I wasn’t listening anymore.
My vision sharpened; it was like every movement in the room was slowing down; I could hear Darius’s breathing; I was tired but steady. On the other hand, was Kade, I could hear his heartbeat, fast and eager. I could smell something more behind the stench of perspiration and blood that filled my nose.
It was power!
My power.
I sprang forward, quicker than I had ever moved before, and pounced for Caleb. We both crashed into the wall when I smashed into him. He gasped as my fingers wrapped around his throat.
I didn’t even think. I squeezed.
His eyes widened in shock, struggling against my grip. “Lyra—what are you?”
I didn’t know. But I felt alive.
A sharp pain exploded in my side as someone yanked me off him. I hit the floor hard, gasping. My head spun as I looked up, Kade stood over me, his dagger dripping with my blood.
A deafening roar shook the room.
Before Kade could strike again, Darius slammed into him, knocking him away from me. But this time, he wasn’t alone.
Shadows moved behind him.
His warriors have reinforced
Kade snarled, realizing he was outnumbered. “This isn’t over,” he spat, wiping blood from his mouth. He grabbed Caleb’s arm, yanking him up. “Fall back!”
His remaining men hesitated before obeying. They disappeared into the night, leaving behind the scent of blood and rage.
I let out a shaky breath, my body trembling. The pain in my side was sharp, but the adrenaline was stronger.
Darius knelt beside me, his silver eyes scanning my wound. His hands pressed against it, applying pressure.
“You’re insane,” he muttered. “You could have gotten yourself killed.”
I let out a weak laugh. “You’re welcome.”
He shook his head, but there was something in his expression something almost proud.
The firelight flickered, casting shadows across the blood-stained floor. The war had truly begun.
And I wasn’t running anymore.
I met Darius’s gaze, my voice steady despite the pain.
“What’s next?”
His smirk was sharp and dangerous. “Now? We make Kade suffer.”
The fire crackled between us.
And I knew there was no turning back.
