The legal files arrived the next morning.
Elena sat in Ravenhall's library surrounded by case documents, corporate filings, and evidence of Viktor's legal warfare. The scope was staggering.
He had filed seventeen different lawsuits against Vescari businesses. Asset freezes on twelve accounts. Regulatory complaints with five government agencies. Testimonies from "witnesses" alleging criminal activity. All perfectly legal. All devastatingly effective.
"Coffee," Lucien said, setting a cup beside her. He had been keeping her company all morning, supposedly working on his own laptop but mostly watching her.
"He's smart," Elena admitted. "Most criminals just use violence. Viktor understands that destroying someone legally is permanent. You can rebuild after a war. You can't rebuild after losing everything in court."
"Can you find weaknesses?"
Elena pulled up another file. "Maybe. He's relying on obscure precedents and procedural technicalities. But technicalities go both ways. Give me a few days."
Lucien leaned over her shoulder, reading. He smelled like expensive cologne and danger. "You really love this, don't you? The puzzle of it."
"I love justice."
"Same thing in your mind?"
Elena met his amber eyes. "Isn't it?"
"Justice is subjective. Law is just rules someone powerful wrote down."
"Cynical."
"Realistic." Lucien sat on the desk edge. "You think the legal system is broken because it fails people like you and Sofia. But it's not broken. It's working exactly as designed. To protect power and punish weakness."
"Then why have laws at all?"
"Because even predators need rules or we just eat each other until nothing's left."
Elena wanted to argue, but movement at the library door interrupted them. Matteo entered, followed by a woman Elena did not recognize.
The woman was stunning. Tall, confident, designer clothes tailored perfectly. Long black hair and sharp green eyes that assessed Elena with one calculating glance.
"Elena Moreau," Matteo said. "This is Isabella Castellano. Bella, this is our houseguest."
Isabella smiled, and it did not reach her eyes. "The witness. I've heard so much about you."
"Bella's father runs the eastern territory," Lucien explained. "She's here to discuss alliance terms."
"And to meet the woman living in my fiancé's house," Isabella added smoothly.
Elena's stomach dropped. "Fiancé?"
Matteo's expression remained neutral. "The engagement is political. Merging our families strengthens both against Viktor."
"How romantic," Elena said before she could stop herself.
Isabella laughed. "Oh, I like her. She's got spine." She crossed to Elena, heels clicking on marble floors. "Let's be clear about something. Matteo and I have an arrangement. Business, not pleasure. So whatever you think is happening between you two, you're wrong."
"I don't think anything is happening."
"Good. Because if I thought you were a threat to my family's interests, we'd have problems. But if you're just another asset Matteo's protecting, we're fine."
The dismissal in her tone made Elena's temper flare. "I'm not an asset. I'm a person."
"In this world, everyone's an asset. The question is how valuable." Isabella turned to Matteo. "Shall we discuss business?"
They left together. Lucien remained, watching Elena with amusement.
"Don't take it personally," he said. "Bella's protective of family interests. And suspicious of anyone Matteo shows unexpected attention to."
"He's not showing me attention. He's managing a complication."
"If you believe that, you're not as smart as I thought."
Elena returned to her files, refusing to engage. But Lucien's words echoed in her mind.
She worked through lunch, finding patterns in Viktor's legal strategy. He was coordinating with legitimate law firms who probably did not know they were working for organized crime. Using real regulatory concerns as weapons. Exploiting every bureaucratic delay and procedural requirement.
It was brilliant. And Elena saw exactly how to dismantle it.
She started drafting counter-filings, using the same obscure precedents against Viktor. Finding procedural flaws in his complaints. Identifying witnesses who could be discredited legally.
Hours passed. Elena barely noticed until Rowan appeared.
"Dinner," he said.
"I'm working."
"Now."
The command in his voice left no room for argument. Elena saved her work and followed him to the dining room.
Matteo sat at the head of the table. Isabella on his right. Lucien across from her. Rowan gestured Elena to a chair.
"Isabella has agreed to coordinate intelligence sharing," Matteo announced. "Her family controls ports. Viktor's using them to smuggle weapons. We'll provide evidence to federal authorities."
"Anonymously," Isabella added. "Can't have my family's legitimate operations questioned."
Elena picked at her food, feeling out of place. These people discussed crimes like normal people discussed weather.
"Elena's been analyzing Viktor's legal strategy," Lucien said. "Found something interesting?"
All eyes turned to her. Elena swallowed. "He's using law firms that don't know he's a criminal client. They think they're representing legitimate Russian businesses. If we expose his real identity to those firms, they'll withdraw representation. Ethics violations."
Matteo considered this. "Which buys us time."
"More than time. It destroys his legal credibility. Courts will view future filings with suspicion."
"How do we expose him without exposing ourselves?" Isabella asked.
"Anonymous tips to bar associations. Evidence packages to investigative journalists. Let them think they discovered it."
Matteo's steel eyes held Elena's. "That's good strategic thinking."
"It's what I do."
Isabella studied Elena with new interest. "Maybe you are more than just another asset."
After dinner, Elena tried to return to work, but Matteo stopped her.
"Walk with me," he said. Not a request.
They walked through Ravenhall's gardens. The evening air was cool. Guards patrolled in the distance, giving them privacy while maintaining security.
"Isabella's engagement concerns you," Matteo observed.
"It's none of my business."
"That's not an answer."
Elena stopped walking. "Why does it matter? You said yourself it's political."
"It is. Bella and I have an understanding. The engagement benefits both families. Neither of us has illusions about romance."
"Then why do it?"
"Because in this world, power requires alliances. Marriage is the oldest alliance there is."
"Sounds lonely."
Matteo's expression shifted slightly. "It is. But loneliness is safer than vulnerability."
"Is it?" Elena challenged. "Or is it just another cage you've built for yourself?"
For a moment, Matteo looked almost human. Almost uncertain. Then his control snapped back into place.
"You should rest," he said. "Tomorrow I want you to start implementing your legal strategy."
He walked away before Elena could respond.
That night, she lay awake thinking about steel eyes and political engagements and the difference between protection and imprisonment.
Her phone buzzed. Restricted number.
She answered. "Hello?"
"Miss Moreau." Viktor Konstantin's voice was smooth, accented, terrifying. "We haven't been properly introduced."
Elena's blood froze. "How did you get this number?"
"I get every number eventually. I wanted to speak with you before circumstances become unpleasant. The Vescarris are lying to you. Your sister is safe with my people. Comfortable. Cared for. If you cooperate, I'll reunite you immediately."
"Cooperate how?"
"Testify that you witnessed Matteo Vescari order the execution you saw. Provide details about their operations. Help me bring them to justice legally."
"You mean frame them."
Viktor laughed. "Frame, expose, what's the difference? They're criminals. You're a woman who believes in law and justice. Help me use the system to stop them."
"And Sofia?"
"Will be returned to you healthy and whole. You have my word."
"Your word means nothing."
"Perhaps. But consider your position. You're trapped in Ravenhall, surrounded by men who've manipulated you from the start. Your sister is in my care. I'm offering you freedom and family. What are the Vescarris offering? Protection that feels like prison?"
Elena's hand tightened on the phone. "If I refuse?"
"Then your sister's condition will worsen. Tragic, but unavoidable. Medical complications are so unpredictable. And you'll eventually leave Ravenhall's protection. When you do, my people will be waiting."
The call ended.
Elena sat shaking. Viktor had infiltrated Ravenhall's security enough to reach her personal phone. He was threatening Sofia openly. And his offer was logical from a certain perspective.
She could betray the Vescarris. Save Sofia immediately. Return to her normal life.
All it would cost was becoming exactly what she hated. A liar using the legal system for revenge instead of justice.
Elena made her decision.
She walked to Matteo's office, guards tracking her movement. Knocked.
"Enter."
Matteo sat behind his desk, working late as usual. He looked up, expression unreadable.
"Viktor called me," Elena said. "On my personal phone. Offered to return Sofia if I testify against you."
Matteo went very still. "What did you tell him?"
"Nothing. But he's threatening to let Sofia die if I refuse."
"He's bluffing. Killing her eliminates his leverage."
"Maybe. Or maybe he's desperate enough to cut losses."
Matteo stood, moved to the window. "What do you want from me?"
"Honesty. Complete honesty. No more manipulation or half-truths. If I'm going to fight Viktor, I need to know exactly who I'm protecting and why."
"You want the whole truth about the Vescari family?"
"Yes."
Matteo turned to face her. "Then sit down. Because you're not going to like what you hear."
And Elena realized she had just opened a door that could never be closed.
