Chapter 2: Bribes, and an Interesting Hospital Visit M A R C O THE HOSPITAL DOORS swing open, the momentum from the force with which I pushed it keeping the doors swinging even after I scurry into the bustling building. The morbid scent of death mingling with sickening smell of antiseptic made me inwardly gag; but I am on a mission. "A patient from a car accident just arrived by ambulance, her name is Angel. What room is she in?" I demand swift answers. The stocky woman behind the counter disregards my urgency and leisurely types at sloth pace. "Name?" I roll my eyes, trying not to show my internal unrest. "Angel. I don't know her last name." Hooded brown eyes slowly lift to reach mine in slow suspicion. After 3 grand and a Burlington gift card, I found Angel. I ordered her room be upgraded; demanded the best doctors, threatened the worst receptionists. In the end, all I could do is...wait. "Mr. Romano, you may see her now," I nod briskly, following the nurse. He leads me down a narrow hallway, knocking on the last door to the right. "Come in," I give a dismissive but sincere thanks to the nervous aid, who bowed out of the room. Hesitantly, I pry the door open. "Hello, Angel." Her lips turn up into a soft smile at my voice. "Hello, Marco." A frog hops in my throat, and I clear it viciously, rubbing the back of my neck. "Uh—how do you feel?" "Like I climbed up a tree with my car," she smirks. Immediately my brows dip with the need to ask how the hell she ended up treed anyway. "Thank you for saving me." I look back up at her, violet eyes piercing mine in the most delightful of ways. "My pleasure," The same frog, now a toad has hopped in my throat again. I change the subject, concluding this is just a frog inducing conversation. "So uh, do you have anywhere to go?" For a moment, the large room dwarfs. The light lemony fresh of slightly more expensive antiseptic is nonexistent. The rush of chilling air is unnoticeable. It is just Angel and her sad eyes. Her sad smile. Her sad lie. "Yeah... Yeah, I've got somewhere to go." "Okay," I agree. For now. She nods, smiles, giving room for the comfortable silent haze that surrounds us, in which I figure out how to keep her with me and she tries to figure out how to leave.
